Hello,

I'm having an issue and would like your opinion. After I power up my PC, the bios screen appears, so far so good, then I have the black screen with the blinking cursor on which my PC freezes. It's the first time this happens and I wish some advices or diagnostics I could make to try fixing it.

It's a Packard Bell, with XP Pro .

Thanks in advance

Since you can get to the bios screen, have you used it to test the hard drive?

A cursor on the screen is saying that it's waiting for instructions that it's not getting...generally, this means something like the hard drive being toast, or the MBR (master boot record) is corrupted. If the hard drive checks out as working, look into the other:

Boot off your windows disk, go into the recovery console (First R option). Go into your windows directory, and run - chkdsk /r and then when that's done run - fixboot and fixmbr

Well I can see
Primary Master: Maxtor SERIALNUMBER
Secondary Master: CDDVD
I tried to boot on the recovery CD but still the same only a black screen with it blinking cursor. Maybe because my PC is no use, quite old (6 years).

When you tried to boot the CD, did you change the boot order to go to the CD drive before the hard disk?

Yes. Any idea? It seems I'm having a hardware issue (IMO).

some progress, I took off the HDD then powered on, nothing but the cursor, turned off, put the HD back. Turned on now I have "CPU" and the cursor. Any idea?
