Hi there,

My external hard drive is not powering up when I plug it in the USB port. I've read multiple threads about similar issues, yet none of the answers posted solve my problem. I do know the hard drive is working (tried it on another computer) and all my USB ports are working as well. The hard drive was working properly about a month ago, but I can't recall what has changed since then (I do not use this hard drive very often).

Things to know :
My laptop is a Notebook Acer (Aspire V3-571)
I'm using Windows 7 x64
I can't use system restore
I can use other USB storage devices such as USB keys
I can use another hard drive without any issues as well
The hard drive does not show up in the Device Manager
The hard drive isn't 'new'; there's about 1.5 TB of used space on it

What I've tried so far :
Uninstalling all the USB controllers (and reinstalling them)
Updated my BIOS to the latest version available
Updated my chipsets driver to the latest version available
Updated Windows

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Yes, I tried that earlier, but none of them worked. Thanks for trying though!

I just solved my issue however, but I'm not exactly sure why or how this could have helped. I changed the hard drive's wall plug and it finally powered up. However I doubt this was the real problem since when I put it back in the previous wall plug it works too now. (And yes, the power cable was properly connected before ;P). Oh well, it works, thanks again!

I mentioned that because a year or so ago I had a similar issue.
The external HD would randomly drop connection. In a panic, I ripped the case apart and installed the drive internally on a different machine. Worked perfectly, and is still running.

Turned out that particular USB port on the laptop was failing. Nothing to do with the drive.
