Specific IP address Ping Problems

I have a weird issue that I have never seen before. Hopefully someone out there has. We have a storage server (windows 2003) that used the IP address 192.168.1.12 and has worked for a number of years no problem. Today certain people started to have issues accessing. And it seemed random, didn't matter what switch they were plugged into or if they were on different subnets.

I got a work around for it by changing it's IP to a new one. All the issues went away, but I was not satisfied with that. I got a laptop and made its IP address the 192.168.1.12. At first it had no problems then after about an hour it had the same problems as the storage server. Could not ping all machines, but could ping some.

I cleared out the A Host record for the IP address from our DNS server, but that did not fix it. I tried an ipconfig /release, /renew as well as a /registerdns and a /flushdns.

Hopefully someone has seen this before,

Thanks in advance

hmm what are you using to hand dhcp/addresses? It seems like there is some conflict with using that address. I would say it was another device trying to use that address as well but you would get a popup saying ip conflict. your best bet is to restart whatever device you are using to give out addresses.

Here in our server room we use sonic walls for vpn , dhcp dyndns etc.

change ur laptop's IP to something else and ping for another device using the .12 IP.

It's prly not the DHCP, unless there are 2 devices with the same IP, then reset that.

I'd reset the server and networking equipment (including switches).

If that doesn't solve it, than do a trace route to the .12 IP from both machines that can and can't reach it.

could be something small like a faulty cable. or something like a firewall or ACL blocking communication.

We use just your typical Windows 2003 DHCP service on our domain controller. I will have to give it a reboot tonight as we do have some production things on there (printer server and a few other). That would make sense if it allocated that same IP address, but it did not give that warning like it usually does. And our DHCP addresses are on the .2 subnet not the .1 but stranger things have happened.

if your dchp is supposed to be giving out addresses at the .1 and you are getting.2 some other device is handing out addresses causing issues.

i would do a ip scan on the subnets, i use angry ip scanner, you can add fetchers to search for bios maker etc to find out more info of the devices

I changed it's IP address and pinged for .12. I received Request Time Outs. TraceRT didn't return anything either. To reboot the switches I will have to do off hours as well

I'll try the angry IP scanner to see what is out there in the environment, but our DHCP addresses should all be .2, the .1 is for static addresses such as servers or devices that have NATs in our firewall

thanks for your help and responses

nahh just go to the nearest breaker and pull the main switch then power up all the servers thats what i do. just make sure to disconnect the ups first.... haha I'm just kidding

but now i understand what your saying we have the same setup here. hopefully you find out whats causing it, its most likely some device acting up

There is a big red button behind me that'll do everything but shut the UPS's off. Believe me I've wanted too haha.

Ya that is my guess that something someone brought in is maybe causing this conflict of sorts. If any of the above do fix it I will respond to the thread

good luck ... the funny thing is im in my server room now responding to this i cant think when im typing its so loud haha
