Hello!

I am about to purchase a new laptop for use in uni and would like some opinions on what components would applicable for what I will be using it for. It will mainly be for coursework(math/sciency stuff), but I'd like to play modern games on medium to high settings. Not everything has to be on high, but I'd like to enjoy good graphics at an acceptable framerate.

It can't be a pure gaming-oriented computer so a brand such as Alienware is out of the question.

I was told an i5 of any sort would be fine for this, but I'd also like dedicated graphics, if possible. As for my budget, I have a thousand to spend.

The only requirements are: it has to be less than 5 pounds and the screen should be 13-15 inches max.

I appreciate your help, thanks!

Hi, I would suggest that you wait for Haswell, which comes out next week or get a laptop with an AMD APU. AMD's Kabini will come out later this year as well, and their current APUs would be good as well for light to midrange gaming. I don't have any good advice for laptop models specifically, but yeah I don't know if you need a discrete graphics card since Haswell will have an IGP with supposedly at least double the performance of HD 4000 of Ivy Bridge, which I'm not sure how is measured, but either that or an AMD APU should be good and have better battery life than a discrete card. I think the Intel one is called Intel HD Graphics 5200 or Iris Pro.

Good luck!
