Hey guys, sometime in the Fall I was thinking about SLI-ing my Gigabyte 680 2Gb for around $470 for the card. With this setup I would also need to upgrade my PSU(I was thinking an 850w with my setup).

In light of the 780 release, and seeing the performance enhancement, I am just fishing for opinions on my next move.

Should I spend about $450 on a second 680 with 2Gb?
-PLUS-
$170 on a Corsair 850w PSU

-OR-

Sell my current 680 and use that to purchase a 780 without the upgraded PSU?

*Keep in mind that:

- this is the first potential upgrade since my very first gaming build in March.

- I'm interested in triple monitor (1080p @ 120Hz)gaming at some point and I'm nervous about the 2Gb limitation in the next 3-5 years.

- I will probably want to SLI the 780 as well within the first or second year of getting it.

- Should I stick with 680 SLI awhile and see what Maxwell brings to the table?

-I am new to PC gaming (been a console gamer since Atari) and am so excited by the PC upgradable world.

Any opinions? Thanks

BTW, system is:

i7 3770k @ 4.2Ghz
ASUS p8Z77-v
8Gb Corsair Vengeance RAM
Corsair TX650w
Seagate Barracuda 1Tb HDD

Why don't you wait 4 months and see how competitive the prices are and see what is on the market? It is possible gtx 680 will be worth $250 bucks by then, or perhaps the gtx 780 will be <$500. It is hard to give good advice so far down the line.

Since you seem set on the 780 already, you will probably end up with that. But like impaledmango says, it's pretty far down the line to get into thinking about it too much. Price and availability will be key. There should also be more information about any issues that others may have with the 780s in regards to drivers, etc. If possible it might even make more sense to wait a couple months longer for the holidays when lots of stuff will be on sale. It's hard to give much more advice at this point.

I would wait and see what AMD volcanic islands look like come Q4. I know you're going Nvidia, that's fine, but here's my reasoning:

Nvidia has said that they're replacing the 680 with the 780. if you remember, the 580 didn't see much of a price drop before it started disappearing, and at current prices I don't think it's worth it to go 680 SLI. if you can get a cheap one (say $300), go ahead. otherwise you're right that 2GB of DDR5 won't get you that far in triple monitor gaming in the coming years

the 780 is nice, but depending on how Volcanic island works out, it may get a hefty price drop due to competition. remember those people who bought the Titan just a few months ago? and now the 780 gets within 5-10% performance of the titan for 65% of the price... besides, I can already tell you that a single 780 will NOT get you 120HZ gaming on 3 monitors for many AAA titles. so plan for a 2nd one :)
