Hi all,

My specs are in my signature. I basically found out where MOST of the noise my PC makes is coming from: my PSU.

Quietness is very important to me, and it is unbelievably annoying when I can HEAR THE PSU FAN WHILE WEARING HEADPHONES AND PLAYING A GAME OR WATCHING YOUTUBE VIDEOS.

So please, I am in desperate need of a good, solid power supply. Preferably 700W+.
I currently have an Antec 520W Neo-Eco 80 Cert, and according to two power calculators online, I use approxiamtely 470-490W of power.

Many thanks. Seriously. Many thanks in advance if you can recommended me a silent PSU that is energy efficient and will not break the bank. Thanks!

I have heard that they make the PC and the case much hotter, though.
Is this true?

ooh that sounds great. going to research them some more.

I literally only have Chrome open with an HD video playing on YouTube and a Dreamcast Emulator up and running, and I can hear the damn thing thru my headphones. it's ridiculous. CPU, GPU, and MoBO temps are fine, too. gah, it's so annoying.

You need a minimum 600w PSU with a GTX 580 so your Antec is straining and that is what's making it loud. If you want silence you want a Hybrid fan unit. The Corsair HX recommended above is a rebranded Seasonic G series and is a very good choice. You could also just go with a Seasonic branded unit and go a step up with a Seasonic X 650. It's a higher end unit than the G series the HX is based on and has a reputation for silence.

I think your PSU working to hard so the fan rpm is rising to compesate heat generated by the load..
(since the sound is noticed even with head phones)

IMO by changing bigger wattage PSU could help, not only specific buying the silence one..

Hi,

Ooh. That Seasonic is awesome! Is 650W enough? I'd hate to upgrade it again in a year like I am doing now with this Antec 520W.

650w will be more than enough for any single card, i don't know if it'd do two 580's if you ever go that route.

Yeah. Futureproofing is something I definitely want to do.

Perhaps I will stick with Seasonic's X series but get something like a 750W instead. Or perhaps higher.

Well I went and looked it up, two 580's will pull just over 750w (for the whole system), you'd want an 800w unit. 580's are pretty power hungry.

I don't think your going to find a fanless unit with that much power, for what it's worth I have the same unit above in the 750w kind, and I don't hear the thing ever.
In theory a more efficient unit will generate less heat, so the fan isn't going to be running as hard so it should make less noise. You can shoot for a platinum unit. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
or these people say are really quite. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The Seasonic X series is about as good as it gets. The have a slightly higher end Platinum series but it's not worth the extra cost unless you find them on very good sale. You can base your needs on this list. I would have recommended a 600w unit if Seasonic made one.

The 580 was a power hog although not as bad as the all time power drain that was the GTX 480. The GTX 680 and even the new 780 only need 550 watt units.

I will not get a fanless unit. I've heard that they produce a lot of heat, and my room gets quite moist and humid and hot in the summer, thus it might ruin other components of mine.
I also want to purchase something with a lot of positive reviews. :)
Those Seasonic X series are looking pretty good!

I would not buy a fanless model due to cost myself they are crazy expensive but Seasonic and Silverstone both make very good ones.

The Seasonic X series is truly the benchmark all other power supplies are compared to by the real review sites.

If the 650W X Series from Seasonic is so good, I can only assume that other wattages in the X series are good as well? :D
Yeah?

Okay all,
I just bought the 750W HX from Corsair. Do you think I will be good with the noise problems now? :D

Thanks for the help!

The Corsair is a very good power supply but it's made by CWT not Seasonic. Seasonic makes the HX 650 ( based on the G series ) and the AX 760 and AX 860 both based on the Seasonic X.

The cheapest way to get an X series is this XFX unit.

Same rating as the Seasonic X because internally it is a Seasonic X.

I do not recomend an xfx. I have the xxx 850w and it is loud as balls. I'm looking at this thread because of it XD.
Also, is the Fractal Design Newton R3 600W any good? It's platinum, modular, comes in black and white, and has 5 year warranty?
