I have a Desktop HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1414 PC and I would like to add and older Dell VGA monitor. However, my desktop only has one DVI-I output, the other output is a DVI-D. I have found that the DVI-D output requires a digital monitor or an expensive converter. Can I use a DVI-I to VGA splitter to extend the monitors rather than just clone the display?

You can, but I Think you'll be stuck looking at the same screen - Windows will only see it as one screen and won't allow you to choose which is monitor 1 or 2, so it defeats the purpose unless you want the person sitting in front of you to see what you're seeing
