I have an old hard drive that I am wanting to duplicate and set up in RAID 1. If I buy a new drive and set the two of them up in a RAID 1 array, will it copy over all of my old data to the new drive? If not, how would I do that before setting up the RAID array?

That MAY not be correct, or it might be right on. Confusing? It all depends on how your RAID controller system works. You REALLY need to find and read through the detailed manual for your RAID system. I assume the RAID system something built into your mobo, as so many are now - that is, it is not a separate RAID controller card in your PCI bus. So the manual may be a documentation file on the CD that came with your system or mobo, or you MIGHT have to download it from the maker's website.

Why do you need the manual? It will explain clearly what can be done, and how. SOME RAID systems, for example, will actually allow you to convert a single HDD into a RAID1 array while preserving the original contents. You add the new hardware and the...

Why do you need the manual? It will explain clearly what can be done, and how. SOME RAID systems, for example, will actually allow you to convert a single HDD into a RAID1 array while preserving the original contents. You add the new hardware and the system can make the complete copy of data from the original drive to the new one, thus establishing the mirror drive and creating the RAID1 array. BUT that is not in ALL RAID systems, so you need the manual to help you understand whether yours can do this and, if so, how?
