I've never played, so I want to know if it's worth playing. I like 3rd person, so is the 3rd person in this game decent? I also like fast gameplay. What's this game all about and what kind of person would like it. Where would I start, which game do I try first. Thanks.

33 here, and in fond remembrance of pitfall! Man, what all we've seen in our days! :p

To the OP:
Not a Skyrim expert, but have successfully managed 250+ hours in it so far! I was never into RPG's. The closest experience...

I'm by no means an Elder Scrolls expert. The first game in the series that I've given any considerable time is Skyrim (the last one).

That said, the third-person gameplay in Skyrim is definitely decent. (I don't play first-person-exclusive games.) I've heard that the third-person option in the various previous Elder Scrolls games was bad (or non-existent), so you might want to start with Skyrim.

Can you zoom out at enough so I can see my whole character, or is it one of those to side deals? Ya I was thinking Skyrim too, after searching them.

Yeah, you can see the whole character. It's not too much different from the third person view you'd see in a typical MMO. Targeting is still centered on the middle of the screen though; it's a little easier to aim in first-person.

But I can't stand first person. :)

Oh, one thing I should mention: the game does "trap" you in first-person mode for the introductory sequence of the game, which is sort of a quasi-cut-scene. Don't be discouraged, though! Third person is available for the entire remainder of the game.

Heh, I've been doing this for a long time now. Don't think it'll change.

I'll make a rare exception for a game I really want to play, but first-person just feels wrong. Happily, I've never been into FPS-style gameplay, so it's no big loss.

I started playing Pitfall on a Commodore 64. Anything can change if you want it.

The TES series is pretty crappy from a 3rd person standpoint. I wanted to play, so I tried it first person and hated it.....at first. Once I got used to it, I don't like 3rd person in that style game. Still great in games like Diablo, but not in games that were meant to be first person.

I'm 35 years old. Suffice to say I remember Pitfall on Commodore 64. ;)

As far as the game goes, Skyrim is not a fast paced game. It is fairly slow moving, and you fight small amounts of enemy at a time for the most part.

3rd person works, though at times 1st person makes you feel a bit more immersed. Though 1st person games do make me feel nauseated if my FPS are not high enough (80+).

I suppose it's true that there are certain points in which first-person is more immersive. Personally I've only used it to help me aim spells when fighting flying dragons.

First-person always feels fake to me, though, not more authentic. It doesn't give you a realistic field of vision, and in Skyrim particularly, the fact that my hands are always held up at eye level is not only jarringly unrealistic, it's distracting.

YMMV as always.

The hand location looks more realistic if you have your monitor up close to you. I've been playing games in 3d Vision about a foot or so away from me lately, and the immersion factor is much improved, and the hand location actually looks a bit more real from that location.

Not a Skyrim expert, but have successfully managed 250+ hours in it so far! I was never into RPG's. The closest experience in that arena was the Deus Ex Series, (barring Invisible War, which I couldn't stand for some reason!)

I honestly never thought I'd be able to get hooked onto Skyrim. I bought it because of the raving reviews and feedback from people. The fact that it was released back in November 2011 and people are still raving about it speaks for the value of the game.

It's not a fast paced game. The storyline is pretty good and being an open world (sandbox) game, you're free to do almost anything you want. Once started, it really traps you in its own world (literally!). For me, I was pretty mesmerized with the graphics from the beginning, which for me is a prime factor. The gameplay could have been slightly better viz-a-viz all the battles. But that's about the only negative I can cull out from this title.

As for the third person aspect, not the best in the genre, especially during battles. You can zoom out to a distance and also to up close shoulder cam style view (dead space style). However, for me, a true example of a proper third person genre would be Max Payne 3, which Skyrim certainly isn't. First Person is definitely better, imho. Especially, and like one of the posters said above, the way the hands are placed, you really feel like you're 'in' the world.

The game really traps you in its 'world', and keeps you coming back to it. Definitely a title one should have in his/ her library. Plus, the way you can mod the game on the PC is true awesomeness! Definitely makes it more than worth the $29.99 tag it has on Steam!

You're all awesome, thanks. I want to try and get into first person, but every time I try it I get nauseated. I have Borderlands 2, and haven't touched it (waste of $60). Perhaps this is different though, since it's not an fps game, and I do enjoy swords and magic and shit. The good thing is, it has both options.

Q: I have a quick question, what's the difference between buying the game online vs. buying a hard copy, say from e-bay. I have never thought too much about it since I've only played some mmo's that require account creations. I've played: WoW (did not like that much), Diablo III (did not like), GW2 (did not like that much). As you can see, I like mmo's, but they seem to disappoint. I am currenty playing the 3rd person moba, SMITE, and I love it, but I still miss the exploration factor you get from mmos or rpgs.

If you get nauseated in first person, you may have the same problem I have. I also get nauseated in first person, unless my FPS is higher than 80 FPS. 60 FPS isn't bad either, as long as it never drops below, but I will eventually get nauseated after an hour or so, but 80+ FPS stops me from ever getting nauseated. At least with a 120hz monitor.

Well, I have this piece of crap: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01182749
But my system is decent: i5 3570k, GA-Z77X-UD3H, GIGABYTE GV-N66TOC-2GD

You could try lowering settings to a point you never drop below 60 FPS, and see how it feels in 1st person. It makes a large difference for me.
