I started playing Pitfall on a Commodore 64. Anything can change if you want it.
The TES series is pretty crappy from a 3rd person standpoint. I wanted to play, so I tried it first person and hated it.....at first. Once I got used to it, I don't like 3rd person in that style game. Still great in games like Diablo, but not in games that were meant to be first person.
I'm 35 years old. Suffice to say I remember Pitfall on Commodore 64.
LOL. I'm 32. We're not so different, you and I.
33 here, and in fond remembrance of pitfall! Man, what all we've seen in our days!
To the OP:
Not a Skyrim expert, but have successfully managed 250+ hours in it so far! I was never into RPG's. The closest experience in that arena was the Deus Ex Series, (barring Invisible War, which I couldn't stand for some reason!)
I honestly never thought I'd be able to get hooked onto Skyrim. I bought it because of the raving reviews and feedback from people. The fact that it was released back in November 2011 and people are still raving about it speaks for the value of the game.
It's not a fast paced game. The storyline is pretty good and being an open world (sandbox) game, you're free to do almost anything you want. Once started, it really traps you in its own world (literally!). For me, I was pretty mesmerized with the graphics from the beginning, which for me is a prime factor. The gameplay could have been slightly better viz-a-viz all the battles. But that's about the only negative I can cull out from this title.
As for the third person aspect, not the best in the genre, especially during battles. You can zoom out to a distance and also to up close shoulder cam style view (dead space style). However, for me, a true example of a proper third person genre would be Max Payne 3, which Skyrim certainly isn't. First Person is definitely better, imho. Especially, and like one of the posters said above, the way the hands are placed, you really feel like you're 'in' the world.
The game really traps you in its 'world', and keeps you coming back to it. Definitely a title one should have in his/ her library. Plus, the way you can mod the game on the PC is true awesomeness! Definitely makes it more than worth the $29.99 tag it has on Steam!
