Hello,
My friend and I have been looking at purchasing a computer for video editing. We have been looking at a Lenovo Thinkstation which is on sale for a decent price. The computer is fairly old and has an intel xeon E5420 quad core processor in it. Is this a good option for adobe premier elements video rendering and editing. We have also been looking at i5s but have found them to be more expensive.

Many thanks.

FX 8350 is great chip for the money for what you want to do with it. It will multitask better than an i5 and will approach if not beat an i7 @ stock in heavily threaded workloads for a good deal less money. It would take a six core, lga2011, i7 to soundly beat an FX8350 for what you want a cpu for and that would cost a lot more. You could probably build 2, 8350 systems for what a single lga 2011 solution would cost.

What is your budget? Video editing is very CPU dependent. Most suggest an i7-3770, if you can't afford an i7, I would suggest the quad-core i5-3750.

For the AMD side, which I don't recommend, the FX-8350 is probably your best bet.

Agree with mattius92 but if you don't want to overclock then go for the i5 3470 which offers nearly the same speed but a little cheaper, only go for this if you don't want to overclock. For overclocking the i5 3570K is highly recommended.
And of course that is assuming that you are going to get a seperate graphics card as the integrated graphics on 3470 literally sucks.
