Hello everyone at Toms Hardware, every time i have a tech problem i search your forms and find the answer to my woes every time. You guys really know your stuff. Unfortunately, this time it seems a little harder.

I've just finished my first ever build from scratch. Everything is working great, apart from the speaker jacks (front and back) My USB Headphones work perfectly well, but my set of Creative speakers don't give any output what so ever.

I also have noticed a few yellow '!' signs in Device Manager and wonder if this has something to do with my problem. See picture attached: http://imgur.com/RTMlxxH

Here are my system specifications since i see you guys ask for them sometimes:

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i7 3770K @ 3.50GHz 30 °C
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 670MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8Z77-V PRO (LGA1155) 28 °C
Graphics
S24B150 (1920x1080@60Hz)
2048MB GeForce GTX 670 (MSI) 28 °C
Hard Drives
1863GB Seagate ST2000DM001-1CH164 ATA Device (SATA) 32 °C
168GB INTEL SSDSC2CW180A3 ATA Device (SSD)
Optical Drives
ATAPI iHAS120 X ATA Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS i have updated BIOS to the most recent version, installed audio drivers and updated my chipset.

Just a quick clarification question by "USB headset" do you been their plugged in solely by USB or by Jack and USB.

Did you install all the motherboard drivers? Looks like you may have skipped a few.

In the bios make sure the audio chipset is on. I see that the driver is there in windows. Want rule out the sound chipset is not turned off. Make sure your speakers plugged into the green audio port. I seen this happen a few times. The nvidia or amd hdmi audio output is set as the main audio output under audio devices. If it is make the realtek speakers the main audio output.

My headset is purely USB.

Install all the drivers first, then double check your motherboard connections to the case ports for audio, you probably either did not hook up he cables or have them reversed or something.

Nothing at all, not a sound. Just the same as the speakers.

Right can you go into the control panel, then to hardware then into sound and plug in your speakers and see if they appear. If they dont try headset
If either of them do appears its just a software error which will be easy to fix.
If they don't it confirms its a Hardware or Wiring error.

Here you go. http://imgur.com/QfnJBed
So it would appear it's a hardware or a wiring issue? I'll open up the case and double check everything is as it should be. The audio wire in question would be the very small one which plugs into the bottom right hand side of my asus p8z77-pro right? along with a few others, which are plugged into a block plug which make them easier to plug in? (i don't know the professional term)

If not, where should i be looking?

The Green port on the back of the mb in those block of colored ports is the speaker output port. In audio devices in windows make sure ati or nvidia hdmi audio output not set as the main audio output. The audio output device should be Realtek speakers. The green check mark should be on it.

Now the PC is recognizing there are speakers plugged in. The little green bar that rises up and down when you click the bottom right hand volume icon which indicates fluctuations in audio while something is playing is functioning too, but still without any sound actually issuing from the speakers. I've had a look inside the computer and found, on the little plug of small plugs a couple of pins actually labeled 'Speaker' but i've nothing to plug into them. Any thoughts?

The hard port in the back of the pc is hard wired to the mb. It only stop working if the port s snapped off. Your issue now is under audio devices is the wrong one is set as the audio output device. Change the default device to speakers.

With audio cd playing and your USB headphones not plugged in the audio ports on the back should be working. You may want to try and install the newest Realtek high def audio drivers from real. The only other spot is if the Realtek control panel as the audio settings wrong.

Everything seems to be fine, Realtek is recognizing the speakers, every other audio option i can think of says they are working, every option has been chosen to ensure that the speakers are the primary device and yet - no sound

I'm close to giving up, unless one of you guys feels like doing some remote assistance

Are these powered speakers? the output from the computer usually won't drive speakers they need power.

Have you tested these speakers? Are you sure they work?

there are three differen't places you can mute the speakers. First looks like a white speaker in your icon tray. Second is the orange looking speaker in your icon tray. third is a little hidden. Double click on the orange speaker icon to bring up Realtek HD Audio Manager. Click on the Device advanced settings in the upper right. the first selection is to mute the rear output device when front headphones are plugged in. Even if you don't have the headphones plugged in select the other circle. If that fixes it you may have other issues with your front plugs.
