Could I have a dead memory bank?

Hi guys,

I have 4gb (2x2gb) of factory-installed memory in my Alienware m11x, running Windows 7 64-bit.

System properties says I have 2gb installed; the BIOS lists memory bank 0 as 2gb and memory bank 1 as 0gb, though both sticks are physically installed. I've tried switching the RAM sticks... the BIOS listed the same memory bank as 0gb.

I used some canned air to clean the pins, but it didn't fix the problem. Do I have a dead memory bank? Is there anything else I can try to fix it?

Thanks in advance... I'm really not sure what else to do!

Solution
If you switched the memory around and had the same slot showed zero then it is a slot on the mb problem. That is an RMA situation. Do you only have the 2 slots? If not try the other 2.

I did as you said. Under SPD, it gives me stats for memory slot #1, but all the fields on the page for memory slot #2 are greyed out. That's a dead memory bank, then? :(

Well, the laptop is well out of warranty, and yeah, I only have the two slots. Would it be just as well to install a 4gb stick in the working slot?

Well, since the one slot isn't working, can I just leave that slot empty and upgrade the RAM in the working slot?

Oh, good... It's sad to see this thing falling apart, but now I know I can force a little more life out it. Thanks for your help!
