Windows Reformatting problem

So yesterday, I bought a copy of windows 7 off of a friend. I promptly reformatted my Western Digital Barracuda 1TB hard drive, which contained Ubuntu at the time. After popping the Windows disk into my optical drive, I received this error.

Boot from CD/DVD:_
error: unknown file system.
Grub rescue>_

After testing again with a different, clean hard drive, I was prompted to choose between Windows XP Pro or Windows XP 2003. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Call your friend, and ask him if he gave you the right disk.

It is. Because of his work position, he got a free windows 7 64 bit intended for his company's DELL computers.

Well...if you have a completely empty HDD, and the only thing bootable is the DVD, and it asks you "Windows XP Pro" or "Windows XP 2003"....that would lead one to believe that Windows 7 is not on that DVD.

But see, that's the thing. If my Hard Drive was empty, I shouldn't be getting grub errors, right? Seems mainly like a linux thing, so maybe it didn't reformat? And concerning Windows....yah, I need to get a refund :D
