I always get upset when it happens because the only fix I've found for it is to restart my computer.

What happens is, for no apparent reason, anything playing sound will stop and refuse to start again. For example, a Youtube video that was playing fine a second ago will stop playing but it's not paused - it just won't play. The little button showing you where you are in the video will stop moving too. Same goes for FL Studio and Windows Media Player (although WMP plays, it's just silent). Also anything else that uses sound (including sounds the system makes) is silent too.

It only happens when I'm playing sound. It's never to my memory happened when I'm not at the computer or when I'm doing silent things.

If I restarted my computer at 12 noon, then put on a two-hour Youtube video, it would give out somewhere around the forty five minute mark. If I restarted it at 12, played five minutes of video, left for a half hour, and played another ten minutes, it would be fine. It's like each restart buys me 30-60 minutes of sound.

I'm on a Windows 2000. Yes I have checked to see if the system / program sound is on.

Help would be great; I'm getting pretty frustrated.

I had a similar problem using Windows 7. Since i have both front and rear connections for sound i managed to fix this by unplugging the front port allowing the rear to take over then replugged it back in, works just fine. But considering you're using Windows 2000 it could be a similar issue but i don't know if unplugging it then replugging the speakers back in would work for you.

That would be an easy fix, but it sounds like you might be having an issue with the sound card itself. When was the last time you opened your PC up to check/clean the dust out? That would be my second option if you haven't done that already.

You could have an issue with the drivers or the audio card itself might be going bad or it could be something wrong with your PSU. Have you experienced any lockups or have noticed when you hook up too many USB peripherals that it causes some to malfunction or some other strange problems?
