Onboard Audio Problem

I've been using Asrock Z77 Extreme4 broad flawlessly for several months now. After leaving my machine on overnight my sound has suddenly stopped working. I only use the green audio jack in back. When I plug it into headphone jack on my case it works. I did notice that my speakers will emit distortion when plugging in the jack on every out on the motherboard except for the green one. I'm guessing it has gone bad, anybody care to confirm?

Is windows set to automatically update? Can you check and see if your audio drivers were updated by windows? This has happened to me. Windows has killed my audio and LAN both with garbage updates in the past. I hide those two updates now so they do not show.

edit:
Try reinstalling the audio driver.

It's not set to auto update. I selectively update windows, and shutdown the service when done, I don't like unnecessary services running. But I haven't done anything with drivers in a while so that shouldn't be an issue. I was playing galactic civ 2, with sound, the previous night, by evening the next day, nothing. Forgot to mention that every so often (maybe once a wk if that) my sound system would loudly pop for no apparent reason while unattended. Intuition tells me its the green audio out jack. It just seems like a ridiculous thing to break, not to mention uncommon?

Edit: Also if was a driver issue, I assume I wouldn't have sound from headphone jack but that's what I'm using now (switched playback devices to headphones and have it through my case). I did get newegg extended coverage for motherboard but I just want to make sure I've done everything possible through my end.
