Hi,

I have motherboard with dual channel ddr 3 with 4 slots.
I only have one 8gb ddr3 stick right now. Is it ok if I install just the one stick?
or am I required to populate the slots with 2 sticks at a time or 4 sticks at a time only?

Basically the question is can I populate the slots with odd numbers of sticks?

Thanks!

Solution
You can populate as many as you want. One, two, three, or four. The motherboard does not care. If you plug another 8GB DIMM in later, you'll get dual channel support which grants double the bandwidth.
To expand a little on what KSham said, with just the one ram module, you should run fine, just in single channel. You will still have the dual data rate of the ram but not dual channel function. To get dual channel function later with another ram module, the module should be identical to the first (same make and model).
