If an individual used a usb broadband modem for the internet connection on a wireless linksys wrt54gs router, is a dsl modem necessary ?

Your largest issue will be connecting the USB to the router. Even with the newer routers modem support is very limited and I doubt that old router you have will support it. Most the USB modems you connect to a router are 3g/4g cell type broadband. The router must have a driver for each brand of modem and sometimes even the cell provider.
