Copying from network drive to hard drive

I'm having problems copying files from a network drive to my D: drive. Let me explain.

I am trying to make a backup of the C: drive of my Desktop machine, which is running Windows XP SP3, onto my laptop which is running Windows 8. I can see the C: drive of the XP machine under Network on a line that contains the name of my desktop computer. When I click on that line, I can see "Windows C Share". When I click on that, I can see all the files and folders on the desktop's C: drive.

I did a CTRL-A and then a CTRL-C to select and copy everything on that share. When I paste it into a folder on the hard drive of the laptop, there is a long delay while it does discovery (there are apparently over 160,000 files on the C: drive), then it appears to be starting to copy but it immediately stops and complains that it needs administrator permission to copy the first folder on the C: drive. The wording of the message, which I don't have handy, suggests that it thinks it needs sufficient permission to change the file, even though I only mean to make a backup that isn't going to be altered. On the Windows machine, I had already right-clicked on the C: drive and checked "Share this folder on the network" but, since that didn't seem to be enough, I also checked the box that said "Allow network users to change the files". But after trying to copy the files on again, I got the exact same message again demanding more permissions.

What do I need to do to get this copy to work? Also, can I turn off permission for network users to modify the files on the XP machine's C: drive? I really only want a backup of the C: drive so that I can restore it in the event of a problem. (I need to do a reinstall of XP on the desktop to deal with an issue which shouldn't affect it's C: drive but I'm just trying to take some precautions.)

Are you copying the whole drive across? ie including the windows system files . if so try copying one segment of your hardrive across e.g.. just your documents and see if that works. If that works its likely you dont have permission to copy some files across ( i believe its impossible to copy some system files that way). If it doesn't theirs an issue with your config.

Thank you to all responders!

You're right, this is NOT an acceptable way to make a backup. I'll use a proper backup program instead. That's a much better solution. I don't know what I was thinking.
