HDD password is frozen on Acer Aspire E1-531

I'm attempting to assist an elderly friend with a new laptop Acer E1-531 but she can't remember her passwords; have been able to run NT Offline Password from boot disk however when prompted to enter the partition number, (there is only one: /dev/sda1) the number 1 is not accepted; have removed the battery to no avail; is this problem related to the HDD password being Frozen? The Security tab in BIOS will only allow the Supervisor password to be reset; note in order to boot from CD I had to change the Boot Mode from UEFI to Legacy which Disabled the Secure Boot setting; Anyone know how to resolve this problem? Thx for any useful advice!

Yes, Windows 8; have tried partition as 0 but get message 'Trying to mount FAT/VFAT/FAT32 - no such file or directory' ; learning as I go but wonder if it has to do with GPT partitioning on UEFI and I have to run in Legacy BIOS mode?

My friend has forgotton her windows 8 user password; while attempting NT Offline Password recovery, I noted that the HDD password is Frozen; I'm assuming these two issues are connected??
