Hi,

I recently purchased a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus as a replacement to the stock AMD fan and heatsink. I disassembled my computer to find that AMD provided a pesky backplate that seems to be un-removable for its stock fan. The Cooler Master fan states that the provided, custom backplate should be used. My motherboard is an Asus M5A97 (socket AM3+). My processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 with no OC.

Seeing as the AMD backplate seems to be permanent, is it safe to install the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus? Will the AMD backplate be adequate support, or should I return the fan and search for an alternative?

Thank you very much in advance.

The back plates are usually attached from the front of the board through the two part plastic heatsink retention mechanism. Usually the front parts and backplates have to be removed.

I's suggest having a quick look on youtube, there are a few videos showing the fitting of this popular cooler on AMD systems.
