Which high end GPU should I get?

I have $1000 to work with, and it must be able to be purchased from amazon with their amazon prime shipping.

My XFX 7870 recently started having overheating problems, and I just became in love with Call of Juarez so I tried tackling the problem. I cleaned it out with a can of compressed air, when that helped little to none, I changed the thermal paste. When that didn't resolve the problem, I decided to it was either mount my 7870 to a h60 I have lying around, or just buy a better card (airflow in my case was not the problem, I have a HAF922 with 3 200m fans).

I was looking at either a GTX Titan or the recently released GTX 780. They are both $1k on amazon, but I obviously wouldn't buy the GTX 780 for $1k. I would wait for the hype to die down and for the price to drop, as they were sold out on newegg for way less than $1k.

Please suggest any cards that fit the criteria, but I am not crossfiring or anything like that. I would like to buy just one card.

note: I know $1k is alot to spend on a GPU, but I like my graphics, and since it is now the summer I will have a lot more time to play games and I would like to be able to play them for long periods of time on the highest settings possible with no hassle.

EDIT: GTX 780s are no longer $1k on amazon. I may consider just getting this

On the 25th of May, it was $1k on amazon. I saw it myself as it was the same day I found out it was released and went to see the price. But now after rechecking, there are much more than just one option and they are $650

If you spend $1k, don't be silly and get a 690, which gives you at least 50% better framerate.

If not, go with a 780 if you must, but know that it's overkill for what you're wanting to do.

$650 is still too much for the 780's performance - wait for $550 or 600 at least. If you're willing to wait just until AMD's next linup drops, I can pretty much guarantee you that the 780 will become much cheaper.

What are the system specs?
What display/s are you using?
Will the PSU handle the upgrade?
Why not wait until the GTX770 is released and see what that brings to the table?
What is the maximum airspeed velocity of an unladen Swallow? (Monty Python humour).

Any idea on when the 770 will be released? If it is sometime soon I can wait, but if it's one month+ wait I can't :(

I'm getting bored of just having to watch movies, since I can't game unless it is some webpage game.

EDIT:
My build is...
i7-3770k
Asrock z77 extreme4
20gb ram
h60
256gb HDD (will upgrade later to a ssd, but i see no point right now as I only play 2-3 games at a time)
XFX 7870 (overheating problem)
and i recently upgraded to a AX850

I doubt I can still send it in, as I broke the sticker seal that was attached to two screws. But either way I was still looking for a upgrade when it was working perfectly.

Good point from krazeee: what about an RMA? Even if you do get a new high end card, you'll still have a 7870, either to E-bay or keep as a reserve.
The GTX770 should be arriving this week, up until now Nvidia have only released the flagship $1,000 Titan and super high end (<>$650) GTX780, the general opinion is that both are currently overpriced.
I know how hard it can be to keep money in the pockets when the upgrade urge bites but I think your best bet, financially, will be to wait and see how the GTX770 shapes up.
If you REALLY must upgrade NOW the HD7970 GHz/Boost is a big step up from the 7870 and a good deal less expensive than the 780/Titan.
