hi everyone, i am having serious dilemma over which gpu to get. i currently have the 5870 1gb and its not good enough for 1920x1080 gaming or should i say HD gaming. i mean its not bad but i have to turn off AA to get good frames so yeah. I want a card which will be fine for the next 2-3 years and i only plan on running them at 1920x1080 so no 2/3 way monitor set up. so now i want to upgrade to nvidia bc the catalyst drivers are shit. i dont know if i should get the gtx 670/680. i looked at the benchmarks and basically the 670 is few frames lower than 680. i mean do you think the 680 is worth the extra frames and the $$? oh also i have the an amd system set up, do you think it will cause bottlenecking? its a phenom x4 955 but i will upgrade to the 8 cores next month.

thanks

Right now Nvidia are starting to release their latest refresh cards, so far only the flagship components have been released but the more affordable 770s should become available soon, so I'd suggest you wait a little longer and see how things pan out before making any $300+ purchases,
Consider the upgrade carefully, AMD 8 core chips are usually beaten by Intel quads for gaming uses and with the imminent release of Intels new Haswell CPU's, prices are already sliding down.
If you can't wait ;): No, the 680 is not worth the extra, go for a GTX670 and treat yourself/girlfriend/boyfriend/mother ;) to a little surprise with the cash saved.
Currently the CPU will restrict a GTX670 but the upgrade-or some overclocking if possible-will eliminate that.

oh man this sucks cause i just got a new am3+ board for the fx series so i have to stick with amd for now. so are you basically saying get the 8 cores then upgrade to a gtx 670 to avoid bottlenecking. on my previous board, i had my phenom overclocked to 3.8ghz so i can try to overclock on my current board as well.

what is your thought on hd 7950? should i get that instead of nvidia?

The Intel advantage is noticeable, but you'll see an improvement with the 8 core FX as well, especially with an overclock so don't beat yourself up over it.
The GTX670 tends to be quieter, smoother, cooler running, with a lower power draw and PhysX is fully supported. Downside is it just does n't overclock well and lacks the AMD game bundle.
The 7950 hits back by being better at high levels of AA, most overclock like crazy and the games bundle may (or may not) have a title or two you might be interested in. Downside is mainly noise, for some reason neither AMD nor their partners seem to be able to match Nvidia for cool, quiet operation.
No, I'm not going to drawn into an argument over drivers only to say that in the last few years I, personally, have not had a single driver issue with either my previous 6950 nor my current 7950.

ok i think will go with the hd 7950 bc of its overclocking capabilities. but will my current cpu (x4 955 stock) be able to handle the new gpu?

There will be some loss of performance but, as I said, the CPU upgrade will stop that.
Two final points:
Check the installed power supply has the required power and connectors, most 7950s need 1x6 and 1x8 pin PCI-E leads. Its OK to use a 6-to-8 pin converter and the cards usually come with one but it is NOT a good idea to use molex/PCI-E adaptors.
Like most high end cards the 7950 is physically large, check it will fit the case ;).

yes my power supply should be good enough. its 650w and has 2 x 6 pin connectors. the 7950 which i plan on getting needs 2 6 pin connectors and as for the case, i have the coolermaster haf xb which should be able to fit the 7950.

and many thanks to you for your help!
