I'm building a gaming computer, and I'm not sure of what MB I should be going for, the alteratives are the ASUS MAXIMUS V FORMULA (I find it hard to find a case to hold a E-atx, and it's expensive) the Gigabyte G1.Sniper M3 (This one is cheaper, but does not include wireless network, and with a wireless network card it doesn't have room for a Soundcard) and last the ASUS P8Z77-V. So my question is, what do I look for in a gaming motherboard, the ROG MB seems like a obvious choice but then again it is the price and size! Really appreciate help!

Eager (but green) PC gamer!

1. with buy just too costly...
there is no such thing as a gaming mobo, they are all perfectly happy gaming. A gaming mobo could be described as a cheap one that lets you buy a bigger gpu.

The 'extra' overclocking features might get you an extra 1-5% in performance, not spending the extra $100 would get you an extra 20% if you put that money into a GPU.

My thoughts exactly!
So which MB would you recommend?

while choosing a motherboard you gotta decide on few things as below;

0. what kind of cpu are you going to use
1. what kind of case are you going to use
2. how many pcie slots do you need
3. what kind of outputs do you need
4. are you going to use any motherboard integrated gpu/sound/ssd etc...
5. are you going to overclock the system
6. SLI or CrossFire setup
7. what color do you like :)

so as a so called "gaming motherboard" you actually need at least

1. intel or amd based mobo on preference
2. usually a mid tower or full tower is selected which results in choosing atx or micro-atx motherboard
(if you are going for small tiny stuff you may need itx or slim itx motherboards dependent on case choice)
3. number of usb's (3.0/2.0), number sata's (sata3 or sata2), firewire, thunderbolt, optical outputs, sound channels etc.
4. cpu integrated / mobo integrated gpus, mobo integrated m-ssd's, number of sound channels or if you need discreet soundboard you may need extra pci channels
5. if you are going to overclock the system, make sure that it supports full voltage and multiplier controls plus quality copper board (also called pcb) to endure high voltage and high temps
6. if you are going for multiple graphics card setups you may want to get at least 2x 16xPCI channels to support your both gpus or more channels for more gpus...
(also keep in mind micro-atx board generally doesnt support more than dual gpu setups)
7. i like blue ! i hope you also do :p

so... there is basically no gaming mobo, but theres for sure a mobo for your gaming setup.

1. According to me 1st wait for next gen haswell for best requirements.
2. but if u can't then why are u spending so much money on a mobo?
if you want to.play just decent gaming then you can go with a med range mobo like Asus p8z77-v lk, gigabyte z77x d3h. the both give u same performance in lot less money.
2. if you want some features like WiFi , Bluetooth in future the u can go with ASUS MAXIMUS V GENE. it is a matx mobo but you can greatly oc any CPU, u can sli, crossfire also & specialy u can upgrade it in future with Asus WiFi, Bluetooth combo in its m sata port.
I hope it helps.
thank you.

1. with buy just too costly mobo you can't make a pc high end my friend. because mostly z77 chipset have same performance. there is not much difference in performance. there is only maximum 7% difference between performance in $125 mobo & a $400 mobo. it's a lot difference of price.
2. if you want a great performance with just gaming then you need a best CPU like i5-3570k or i7-3770k. there is also not much difference in performance between i5&i7 only few frames. but if it matters for u then u can go for i7-3770k. it is faster but little just because it has hyperthreding. but u have to pay aprox $100 more for this. I don't think it is good for $100.
3. & a best GPU . it is also a most important & precious component of a high end gaming pc.if u just want to play crysis3 on ultra settings then u just need a single GPU like gtx 780. but if u want to make some future proof & want to play on big screen or more than one screen then u have sli. u can get one another GPU like gtx 780.
4. then other part is ur PSU. if you just want to play on clock speed & with one GPU like gtx780, then you just need a maximum 650w PSU. but if u want to play on OCing , sli, crossfire then u need a minimum 850w PSU for like gtx 780 GPU. you also have to take it in mind that you have to buy a best PSU brand like corsair, sesonic, etc & minimum choose 80+ certified for best performance, stability& reliability.
5. this all you can do with a just mid range mobo like ASUS MAXIMUS V GENE.
I hope it helps.
thank you.
