First of all, plz don't laugh cause though I stated the term "Upgradation", my present

system is Intel P-3 1 GHz processor with Mercury Kobian 810e MB, 256 MB SDRAM, 40 GB Seagate

PATA HDD, 1 LG CDRW, 1 LG DVD RW (PATA), decibel 2.0 speaker, Microsoft optical mouse, HP

KB, & since my 11 years old (!) G CRT 14" monitor ultimately gave up 2 years ago, I also

have a LG LCD 18.5" monitor ! Also using Frontech Cabinet with 450 Watt SMPS (SMPS is also 2

& half year old). I use XP SP-2 as my OS.

Now I want it to upgrade (?) to a decent P-4 budget PC.

Requirements : Should be able to play HD movies smoothly (mkv etc.), Image editing s/w like

Adobe photoshop will be used, Game is NOT a priority, will use XP & Win-7 as dual booting.
That's All !

Now please advise whether following will be a good one for the same or not:

1) Intel G-2010/ G-2020 processor
2) Intel DH61 WW MB (or any better MB for the above processor ? Plz suggest)
3) DDR3 RAM 4 GB (or 2 GB will be enough ?) Kingston or Transcend ?
4) Should I use my 2 & half years old 450 Watt SMPS with the new system or buy a fresh one ?
5) i-Ball or Zebronics Cabinet ?
6) 500 GB/ 1 TB Seagate or Western Digital HDD ?

I have plenty of CDs. I heard that DVD writers are basically meant for DVD's. So, I want to

keep my old LG-CDRW with the new system. Is it really necessary ?
I am not happy with my existing LG-DVD RW ... also both of these are PATA drive. What will

be the solution ? Can I keep my old 40 GB PATA HDD (too much req. ! :p)
Betw, is ASUS DRW 24B3ST will be a better DVD RW ?

Plenty of queries ... still, please help :)

Well, actually I have mentioned 7K INR only for (CPU+MoB).

O.K. Lets split the Total budget again:

1) Intel G-645/ G-2010/ G-2020 processor - Rs. 3500

2) Intel DH61 WW/ DH61 HO MB (or any better MB for the above processor ?) - Rs. 3500

3) DDR3 RAM 4 GB (or 2 GB will be enough ?) Kingston or Transcend ? - Rs. 1.5K to 2K

4) Should I use my 2 & half years old 450 Watt SMPS with the new system or buy a fresh one ? - Rs. 500 if needed.

5) i-Ball or Zebronics Cabinet ? - Rs. 2K

6) 500 GB/ 1 TB Seagate or Western Digital HDD ? - Rs. 4K

7) ASUS DRW 24B3ST - Rs. 1.5K

Mouse, Keyboard Speaker & Monitor (as already mentioned) is not required as the same will be used from the existing system.

I'd be inclined to saying you should get a new one, due to not knowing the state of the

older one and not wanting to damage the new system. I don't have much experience with

that CPU, thus I'd recommend any i3 CPU if you can fit it in. Or an AMD FX 4300 or 6300 or so. Or even Athlon.

Read my sig as to the RAM. I'd go with Kingston, as I haven't heard of the other one.

The bigger HDD is of course nicer. But since he's so young, perhaps he won't be storing many things. Thus 500GB is fine.

Remember to keep the HDD at 7200RPM if possible. I also haven't heard of those case makers. I can recommend

cases from Cooler Master, Antec, Rosewill, Zalman and such ones though. Oh and about the PSU, chances are you'd

only need a 300W one tops I think. As for the motherboard, make sure it supports the frequency of RAM you're going for

(1333Mhz is fine).

Thanks again for replying.
Me too was thinking for a new one reg SMPS as these are inexpensive now-a-days.

Well, reg processors & Mob, I don't want to expense many cause' (1) An entry level 4th Gen. will do my job & (2) I have not any plan for further upgradation as I am willing to take a decent branded Laptop after 2-3 years or so.
The processors I mentioned is from Sandy Bridge (G-630/ G-645) & Ivy Bridge (G-2010/ G-2020) family. These costs INR 3000-3100 only while any i3 CPU will costs at least 7K here in India.
Basically I need a suitable good Mob for the same which I can't able to decide.
AMD Athlon X-2 also would have been fine (infact, it will costs around 2K INR, which is 1K lesser than the intel one), but I am worried about the "Heating issues" of AMD CPU's. So want to stay in the safer side.

Read your Sig reg. RAM, it seems, though I will do some works related to Photo editing but since it will be of basic level, 4GB will do my job :) [Transcend is most popular & hugely sold memory brand in India]

Ya, I think Seagate HDD is capable enough of 7200 RPM.
Cooler Master is available here but again very expensive :( (5K & above)

G-2010 & G-2020 have 1333 MHz supports ... yes, the main issue is to find a suitable Mob for it & for the Mob, I have no problem from other make, i.e. ASUS/ AMD chipset boards, if it serves better.

How much would an AMD APU cost? Like an A10. In those you get a CPU + GPU cheaply.

I'm sure you can keep the AMD stuff cool. Just add a decent case and an aftermarket CPU cooler.

Then download software like CoreTemp and make sure things stay under 70C or so.

It will cost about Rs. 8K+ ...

Speed is not a major issue for me .. it is meant for an interim budget desktop PC till I can able to purchase a decent Laptop in near future. Infact, if I would not had to purchase & spent appx. Rs. 6K two years ago for my LCD LG monitor to replace the old CRT, I might have been gone for the Laptop at this point of time instead this one. (No one is willing to give even 1.5-2K for the existing monitor)
