I want to build a low power server for FreeNAS

I don't need much CPU power, a dual core 1.8GHz Atom is good enough but I do need LOTS of RAM. 4GB is not enough. 8GB is the minimum.

I will use an Intel brand Gigabit Ethernet NIC so I don't care what NIC is built into the motherboard. I can't use hardware RAID with ZFS either, kind of defeats the purpose of ZFS.

So what I need is a recommendation for a CPU/Motherboard combo that draws the least power and supports 8 to 16 GB of RAM.

Yes, I did search and there are already threads like this but from years ago.

FreeNAS & NAS4Free are NOT limited to the ZFS filesystem.

I would look at the HP proliant microservers. They use a dual-core amd turion, has 4x 3.5" bays & 1x 5.25" bay, also supports ecc memory. HP says it supports a max of 8gb of memory but users have reported successful use of 16gb. They often go on sale with a $50-$70 mail in rebate making them around ~$250ish.

Thanks but which CPU? I'm looking for about 10 Watts at idle if I can get that low.

Thanks, I looked. They don't list power consumption on the spec sheet. Has anyone put one of them on a Watt meter? Also I can see myself going past four drives. I think I want a larger case.

And yes I know I can run FreeNAS without using ZFS. But ZFS is the reason I'm using FreeNAS. So I pay the price with a very large RAM requirement.
