Hello,

Recently, my desktop PC cannot detect the Hard Drives sometimes. Every time when I turn PC on, the BIOS cannot detect the Hard Drives. However if I turn it off and then turn it on again, it can detect the Hard Drives after several tries. After the PC is turned on, everything works fine.

My desktop PC is Compag Presario SR1710NX. I upgraded its CPU, added RAM, added another SATA Hard Drive, and added a Video Card long time ago. The problem started recently, but I didn’t change anything in this PC recently.

Does anybody have any idea about this problem?

Thank you,

David

well...

4 possible answers

1) dying hard drive
2) your PSU is dying/too small for the system
3) your motherboard is dying
4) the cable is faulty

take your pick

Have you got an external HDD or USB Drive plugged in?

I had a similar problem when I plugged in an external HDD. It seemed that the external HDD would take the Drive letter of my second (internal HDD) and the internal HDD would not show up. This might happen with other USB devices too. You may have to assign the drive letters for external devices.

Hey,

I have also been having a similar problem with my new build, where out of no where my HDD would start running slow and then when I restart my PC it wouldn't show up in Windows or the BIOS. When looking in the BIOS I discovered the setting called Aggressive LPM support which was enabled by default. After reading about this setting it seems to be a method of power saving as it reduces the power to your HDD/SSD when they're not being used, I figured this setting may have had something to do with the issue I was getting so I disabled this setting and haven't had any problems since.

I know this thread is over three years old now and I doubt you would still have this problem but I thought I would share this information in case it might help someone with a similar problem.
