I'm having problems with my system crashing, but in a weird way. It crashes with some visual tearing and then stops at what looks like a game of galaga. I'm currently running an old, overheating gtx 280. Any ideas on what it could be? Maybe my gpu finally crapping out?

Solution
This was happening with my old PC's graphics card whenever I tried to play WoW. What is happening is that your graphics card is overheating to the point where it shuts itself down. Honestly, you are going to need a new graphics card as this will continue until it eventually dies, unless you can figure a way out to cool it down. Here are a few tips
1. buy some compressed air, from staples or officemax or a computer store, and remove the side panel of your computer and clean out all of the dust. This can make a huge difference in you GPU's temperature.
2. Undo the side panel and place a normal living room fan right next to it and allow it to run directly into your computer. While this is extremely "ghetto" as the kids would say it can...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are most definitely going to need to replace your graphics card and or heat sink. So long as your card is freezing up like this the worse it will get until it eventually dies. Good luck with everything and please post more questions if you have them. I am happy to help! :D

Thanks! I kind of thought it was coming to its death.
Any low cost cards you would recommend? I was thinking of a 650 ti boost with 2 fans, either msi or asus brand.

Hmmm.. well what is your definition of low cost? I would highly recommend the HIS Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($179.99 @ Newegg) as it is a tank when it comes to gaming. You would definitely see a giant difference in performance with this guy. If you are looking for a cheaper card then the 650 ti boost will do just fine! The only negative things I have read about it is that it requires some troubleshooting when problems arise and it has some auto-abilities that most buyers forget about (auto overclocks when possible and auto v sync, which means you can turn it off in games). Other than that I believe it would do just great. I would also make sure that it is compatible with your current motherboard. Whichever one you choose I would always check that. So in summary: if you don't mind spending the extra money I would highly recommend the HIS Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($179.99 @ Newegg) but if you are looking for something a little cheaper that will do the trick then go ahead with the 650 ti boost. Just make sure you get some fans on it because the heat can spike from time to time due to auto overclocking.
