Internet spike while housemates downloading movie or something

I am a student ,so i rent a room nearby my college. My housemates downloading everyday (Torrent, Anime movie,) ,this make my connection spike while playing games like dota 2 and heroes of newerth . Even i using software to limit their bandwidth to 100kbs per person also useless because i just have 5 mbps but too many of them (10 person)

My question : Currently my hostel using DIR 615 router , i thinking to change a better router (asus RT-n15u ) will this method solve the problem ?

Look into getting a faster connection and sharing the cost or a second modem and router. with the one you have now put a password on the connection and then use Mac filtering to only allow x amount of users on that router. If it open or there to many users on it at one time your going to lag out a home router. You could see if there tomato or other firmware for your router.

If all of you are paying an equal share of the bill, why should you (or anyone) get a higher percentage of the bandwidth?

Friends that come over...sure. Limit their connection speed. But the actual residents? Share and share alike.

Dota 2 actually use only a little bandwidth from my experience, with torrent and dota2 running together I do not notice lags and still get almost maximum torrent speed..

There must be another one that also use the bandwidth, the way i know is by restrict bandwidth usage of each user (bandwidth management), or configure the DL/tor apps so it only use limited connection and speed. or make schedule when it to play/dl..

(or better try invite/convert him to became dota2 player :D)

Share ??? Please think first why i open this thread ...... just because they dont want to share .They just download and using all the bandwidth, they just don't care about others ppl.

This router can only limit upload traffic....this is true of most QoS. So unless you are running out of capacity FROM your house TO the internet your are wasting your time.

There are more advanced routers from asus (not sure the rt-15) that can place hard limits on both the upload and download. So you would give each person say 500k. Unfortunately that is a hard limit and you can't use more even if nobody else is on.

On top of that it only works for some applications. To do inbound limits the router still gets all the data but then drops it as though it got lost. It is dependent on the application to detect this loss and reduce the rate it sends at. Works ok for many things but bit torrent is not one of them. Bit torrent just decides if one session is taking errors then it just speeds up on another one. The router does actually limit the traffic going to the user BUT it has already eaten the bandwidth before the router can discard it.

the torrent apps can limit the bandwidth usage itself if the user wanted to..
so if always better to talk with your neighbor....

fight for bandwidth always a problems if u shared the connection with other (worst if it's a budget ones), u may wanna starting to consider getting new line for yourself..

Also, 10 people does not always = 10 devices. A houseful of young (college?) roommates may well be 15+ devices.

Laptops, tablets, phones...

So giving each device an equal share may well bring it down to 200-300k per device, under ideal conditions. It is going to suck.

Either get a bigger pipe for all of you, or one just for you.

Once again USAFRet is spot on!!! I set up hotspots for a small time share with two locations 900' apart and the bugdet was under $2000. Simple right? WRONG! Of the 140 rooms combined from both locations I found 160 constant connections at peak times for a 20M/5M connection. People had smart phones, wireless games, laptops, Apple TV, Slingboxes, streamed Netflix, etc. and I found out that if it rained eveyone went in their rooms. Users wanted to get on the internet that bandwidth would soon be used up and my phone would start ringing. I would log in, crap in my pants seeing how many people wer trying to connect. reboot the wifi connection and it would let new users connect. Eventually I told the company either buy more bandwith and pay me to install more AP's or I'll start charging the management company for every phone call I receive regarding this issue.

The bottom line: Champagne taste yet having a beer budget.


Listen to USAFRet.....Get more bandwidth or your own connection.
