My relevent system information is as follows:

I5 3570k CPU
16GB DDR3 RAM
OCZ EliteXStream 1,000w PSU
2 1Tb Seagate Baraccuda HDD's
Fractal Design Define R4 Case

I am looking at a solid video card for my setup. I want a card that will run the games that I like to play at ultra with all the "Eye Candy" and "Effects" that I like, while offering me a solid fast FPS. I also want my card to have solid performance for watching movies, video editing, Adobe, and whatever else I throw at it. I happen to very much enjoy my single 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600x900. The games I play are World Of Tanks, AvP, and WoW. I am very much an Nvidia fan, And most of my games are very much Nvidia favored. So I am either looking at a Galaxy GTX 580 MDT for $250, a Asus DirectCU II OC Edition for $263, and a Zotac GTX 680 (Reference Design and Cooler), Open Box at Microcenter for $345.

I believe that for 1600X900, The GTX 680 would be overkill, and that I probably wouldn't see the total gains or full use out of the card. Plus, Zotac isn't exactly a super reputable brand and only has a reference design. The 660ti seems to be about equal to the 580 in performance, but seems to lack the compute abilities of the 580. And the lower bandwidth could play a role when I add all the eye candy and special effects, even at my lower 1600x900 resolution. The 580 seems lowest priced, but is older technology. However, It probably has better compute performance than the other choices, and not sure if having only 1.5GB of VRAM would play a role or not at a low resolution of 1600x900. I don't want to spend more than what I truly need, so these are my choices.

Thanks, And As-Always, I look forward to your advice. I only plan to keep a single monitor setup at 1600x900 with no plans to change anytime soon. Thanks! :)

Honestly with the GTX 680 at that price, I would just get the 680. It will be overkill for that resolution but it is more than likely you would upgrade your monitor in the future than your hardware. 660ti and 580 are great cards as well, but the price of that 680 is too low to pass up. Zotac is a good brand(I believe it is the sister company of Sapphire), just under-rated. Just make sure MC has a good return policy if that card is faulty, seeing as it is open box.

The return policy is only 15 days In-Store. Unless I want to pay the additional $70-80 for a 2 year replacement plan. Zotac also voids the warranty the minute you overclock the card. So those are my only issues with the Zotac.

I also saw an MSI 7950 for $271, but that probably wouldn't help me out with my mostly NVIDIA games, So I kind of eliminated it from the running before it really had the chance.

I would still get the 680 and see if it it's running good for that 2 weeks. See if you can buy the replacement plan during/after the 2 weeks if you plan to keep the card.

Bad news for me. They cancelled the sale for the GTX 680 because they couldn't find it. So my options are now 660 ti and Galaxy 580 MDT. Since I use my computer for more than just gaming, am I better off with the 580?

If your planning on getting a 680 that's great, 580 is also a good card. Can't go wrong either way but the 680 will last longer(in terms of performance). Honestly 8GB is more than enough for gaming/casual use. If you plan on doing some heavy rendering, graphic design, etc. then you will need more RAM.

If you already have the 16GB then might a well keep it, it can never hurt to have more RAM. Also I just looked at your system info and I'm not sure if you already have all those parts or not, but 1000W PSU is extremely overkill for that system. And I would advise against Seagate HDD's and get yourself a Western Digital one. But once again if you already have those parts then you should be perfectly fine, and can disregard what I just said.

Is it worth me upgrading from a GTX 580 to a GTX 680 for overall system performance and not just gaming? I can get a Zotac 680 for $100 more than the 580. But I am only running a 1600x900 monitor. Would it really be worth it? At that resolution, would I really see an increase in system performance? Thanks.

Overall system performance? No, but the 680 will provided longevity over the 580. Honestly if you a sure that you are going to be using a 1600x900 resolution for a long time 2+yrs, then just get a 580. The 680 is overkill for that resolution, but if you plan on upgrading to 1080+ then I would get the 680.

Greetings Fellow Members,

I currently have a Galaxy GTX 580 MDT that I just bought a few days ago for $256. My local Microcenter has a reference model Zotac GTX 680 that they have for sale for $344 that has two 6-Pin power connectors and blower-style cooler, and also an MSI Twin Frozr 680 for $399 that has it's non-refernce cooler as well as both a 6-Pin and an 8-Pin power connector.

I happen to very much enjoy my current monitor which is an HP2009m, Which is a 20" 1600x900 monitor, and I don't plan on upgrading the size of my monitor any time soon.

I am seeking the best bang for my buck out of the three above choices. This decision would be for compute, system performance, gaming, and overall performance.

The MSI card has more power connectors than the Zotac, So does that mean it overclocks higher than the Zotac? Would I be better off just keeping the 580 rather than upgrading to either 680? I want to follow through on one of these three options tomorrow and don't want to waste money on something pointless or a waste. My current system is...

I5 3570K
16GB RAM DDR3 RAM
OCZ ElITEXSTREAM 1,000 WATT PSU
FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R4 CASE
2 1TB SEAGATE BARACUDDA HDD'S

Thank you very much for your help. I want the best option of the three for my system. Thank you very much. I just want to finalize my build and be done with it for a while.
