Low available memory

I was having an issue with Windows only being able to use 4GB memory.
It showed up as "Total Memory: 4096MB" and "Installed Memory: 8192MB".
So I reseated the memory, or rather switched slots. I went from slot 2-4 to 1-3. It's now showing my total memory as 8178MB, problem solved.

However, my available memory feels a bit low.

Even when I had just booted windows it only showed up as 6012MB available memory.

Is it normal for it to "skip" out on some memory. Windows obviously uses some additional memory but is it as much as 2GB? Maybe I'm just paranoid...

It is normal for the system to set aside some memory for it's use. 2 out of 8 GB seems a little high but I wouldn't worry about it. Windows 7 generally does a pretty good job of memory allocation and you would likley slow things down rather than speed them up if you start tweaking.
One quick thing to make sure the memory isn't being wasted is to run "msconfig" select boot then advanced and check to see if a maximum memory is set.

I checked that before when I was having the issue of it only using 4GB, but no maximum memory was set and none is set at the moment.
