Can you confirm if you motherboard has 3 or 6 slots for RAM?

Depending on your current configurations (seems 2x 4GB), you can either add a 3rd 4GB module to upgrade to 12GB in total, or get a new set of tri-channel RAM (3x modules).

What version of Windows to you have? Reason I ask is that Windows is limited to that it can use/access.
Vista/Win7 32bit (any flavor) = max 3.2GB
64bit Home Premium = 16GB
64bit Pro/Ultimate = 32GB+

I have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Through Dell Diagnostics, one RAM module is faulty and needs to be replaced. Was using as opportunity to upgrade, but maybe don't need to. Not a techie so bear with me please. Specs say 6 internally accessible DDR3 DIMM sockets. Hope that's what you mean. Thanks so much. Appreciate everyone's input.

Since we are dealing with Dell, we have to play by Dell rules and for this we need to know your Dell model.

Upon checking your motherboard model, I came to conclusion that most likely you have Dell Studio XPS 9100 or 435t, since Dell produced BIOS in relation to the model, that is why model is important

Just to help you a bit this is XPS 9100 manual ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_studio_xps_desktop/studio-xps-435_Setup%20Guide_en-us.pdf specs on page 56

XPS 435t manual ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_studio_xps_desktop/studio-xps-9100_setup%20guide_en-us.pdf specs on page 60

Both look the same from outside, but BIOS NVRAM for XPS 9100 is 4MB and for XPS 435t is 16MB and there more differences, so your model please.

Hello @ PC996!

I concur with what @Kisianik has mentioned in the previous post. Since, we are not sure what the model might be it will be better if you could provide me with your system's dell service tag number. It is an alpha numeric code usually of 5 or 7 digits and ends with 1, most of the times. Or you could do a scan using the following tool - System scanner

Thanks.
