Hello boys and girls! My question is whether an upgrade would really be worthwhile for me. These days I'd probably consider myself more a casual gamer, mostly Xbox and PS3 lately, what with grad school and kids etc.

With the recent console announcements, I'm not really excited for either one, and although I know I'll eventually buy them, it won't be for a few years. Which brings me to my actual question, I figure I should go ahead and upgrade my PC, so it will last me a few years!

I used to frequent the forums constantly, but I've been out of the game for quite awhile now, and although I still keep up with big news, I'd like to see what the forum gurus say!

Budget: somewhere in the neighborhood of $300, I plan on selling my current GPU to offset costs, so the budget is actually more like $200ish(so initially I'll spend around $300).

Current specs:
i7 920 running at I think 3.5ish right now?
6gb OCZ gold ddr3
OCZ vertex 3 128gb ssd
Couple of spinners for data
Radeon HD5850 1gb
Corsair TX 750
Saber tooth x58 mobo, only pcie 2.0

My thoughts were to upgrade to 12gb ram, and grab a 7870xt. But I'm so far out of the game(as you can tell from my rig!) is it even worth these upgrades? Any new rumored GPU's coming out next month I don't know about?

Thanks for the help!

The rebranded 8k series is the OEM versions.

A 8970/9970 will come in a few months, which is not the rebranded 7970.

It should be 35% faster then the 7970Ghz edition.

Slamer, I read that the 8000 series radeon a are going to be just rebadged 7000's, is that correct? What is nVidia cooking up? I use my PC for more than just gaming, and I'm thinking if I don't upgrade the RAM now, tri channel will be extinct and impossible to find. But I'm also not entirely against holding off on the RAM and throwing it at a beefier GPU. When are the new cards rumored to release?

What are the advantages of a 7950 vs the 7870xt? I am not opposed to overclocking by the way. I know the 7950 is faster, but is it worth the extra cash?

I'm also not opposed at all to anything the green team has!
