Hey guys,
I am about to buy a new PC and I was wondering if you could help me with my decision.
I cann't make a choice between the 780 or 7970. There is a big money difference 50% more up from the 7970 to the 780. But, it is about 20-25% faster, it has CUDA and PhysX, which I would use for blender and the physX in metro last light looks just fabulous.
Here would be my PC specs.:
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - Intel Z77
Intel Core i7-3770K ( I put this there, just to get the price about right, I would get the new Haswell, 4770k)
GELID Solution Tranquillo - rev. 2
Seasonic M12II-620 620W
CoolerMaster HAF 912 PLUS, black
Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600
BenQ GW2750HM
I skipped references as mouse, keyboard...
ASUS HD7970-DC2T-3GD5 or GV-N780D5-3GD-B
The ASUS would be for 347 pounds + 13pounds (the cable DP>HDMI) = 360 pounds for the whole where the gigabyte would be 520 pound (no need of a cable).
So, there is a 160 pounds difference, what would you recommend?
Is it worth it? Have you got any experience with the ASUS, I've read and seen a few videos, where the AMD has some artefacting and also, the ASUS is Voltage locked, so I wouldn't be able to get the max out of it as I can from the 780 which is a good OC.
The Nvidia has just better drivers (not much, but it is nearly flawless), but it is also more expensive than AMD. First I thought that I might get another 780 in 5 years time for an SLI, but I think, that the 780 after 3 years would be old and not selling or selling still for a high price that I won't be able to afford.
Fire away :)

Actually I have more than enough money to build a "beast" PC. But I also have other priorities. I pay my rent, pay college, track & field athlete and have a girlfriend. The only game I play is BF3 and I play it on Ultra, so why bother upgrading? Plus in most games you would get comparable performance with a pair of 650ti boost, at half the price.

Splendid
A pair of 650 ti boost would out perform you setup in most situations yet cost the same lol. But in all seriousness your cpu bottlnecks games like crazy its outdated and even when it was dated it was seriously lacking

We all know a 3570k would be ideal and phenoms are old blah blah blah. The matter here is 780 vs 7970. And he already has the answer. If he has the money and wants to spend that money he should get the 780. If not, he can spend only half the price and get 80% of the performance with a 7970. Trash talking about my CPU won't clarify his doubts. Even if I bought an i5 the extra fps would get swallowed on the 60Hz refresh rate of my monitor. And a pair of 650 ti boost costs $140 more than a 660, also I bought my 660 when it just came out so the boost wasn't even a rumor back then.

I see where you are getting at, it is true that the 7970 is 20% behind the 780 and is hafl the price. But the Nvidia is THE Nvidia, what I mean is you get with it a great support (drivers) a CUDA and a physX, which is only an Nvidia thing. I would say, that the 7970 is a raw power, it is more convenient for the money, but the FPS isn't all. There are guite a few problems with the AMD shuttering the FPS drop, where even weaker cards are still holding a good FPS. On 30.5. comes out the 770, if that would be for the price of the 7970 and will do a like (some sources say that it should outperform for 10%) which would make my decesion quite easer, but it wont the the 110 core as titan and 780 has. But I think I can live without it. :)

This is what I was thinking too, at first I thought, I am gonna buy a 7950, I would never spend that much as for 7970. Then it came to that, I added the 7970. And then came a problem a 780 came out and I was absolutely stunned. It is 5-10% less performances that the Titan and cost 30% less, WOW!! Then I saw what the physX does in metro last light and I got an upgrade bug in my head. :D
I have the money to afford it, I worked hard for it during my summer holiday and I haven't bought anything for quite some times meaning I haven't made my self happy. People who only save save save and don't enjoy don't really live. I know, that somewhere people have just enough money to pay the bills. It is a real puzzler. I think if I was in situation of upgrading, I would go for the 7970, but I am buying a new PC so I quess, the 780/770 will be the choice.
