Dell XPS 8500 Graphics Card Upgrade for 3D Modelling/ Rendering

Hi Guys

So i am an industrial designer looking into setting up a machine to use primarily for 3D modelling and Rendering. I will be using Cinema 4D and Solidworks along with a full CS6 creative suite.

I am really liking the Dell XPS 8500 model and i am currently pondering weather to settle for the i5 version and upgrade the GPU or to fork out a bit more for the i7.

I am after some advice and knowledge about what graphics card to uprade to i have been told about the AMD Radeon 7770 will this be compatible ? i Have a budget here so cannot fork out for anything like a quadro so any suggestions i am all ears.

If you haven't already bought this PC, there are two options for you. You can either build your own or get a custom built one built for you by a company.

Building your own is a great experience, and will save you a lot. The price that Dell will charge you for an i7 version of the XPS8500 could afford you an i7 and a GTX650Ti/HD7770 with money to spare! It's not as hard as a lot of people think, and I would happily recommend you a parts list.

If you don't feel confident building your own, there are companies that can let you choose the individual parts for a PC, and then they will build it. It will most likely still be cheaper than buying with Dell, and you could end up with a faster PC for less with both of these options. I could also Spec up a PC on a site for your needs as well.

I have seen some <$800 XPS deals out there. While not bad, for graphics intensive work you will need to install a new PSU and a descent graphics card. That's probably another $300. Now there are some perks with the XPS 8500 you may or may not need, like all the USB sockets (2 & 3), wireless card, etc..

You definitely want the power (>= 600W) and very good GPU card along with an I7 CPU... not a lot of lower cost off the shelf stuff out there meeting this requirement.

It is simpler and quicker to upgrade the XPS 8500 than a home build, but you will likely end up spending more. You will also want 16GB - 32GB RAM.

Or he could just use a custom PC site, like DinoPC or Cyberpower, depending on the country.
