Right, so basically what happened was I was gaming late at night without a care in the world... Then my PSU overheated, now I was concerned so I left it off and went to bed.

Around 11 hours later I tried to turn it on, which I shouldn't have, at first nothing happened. It was silent and no power seemed to get through. I stood back for a second to think of who I could take it to. Then it blew up... I didn't see what part it was but now I know it was the PSU. There was a flash and a bit of smoke. I turned the power off and left it a while.

After around an hour or so I took it apart and realised it smelt funny, turns out it was just the PSU and not any other components. I took the PSU out and had a look inside it, now I'm not familiar with the inside of a PSU so I was walking into unknown territory here and there was no one else who could look at it as I live in a small village, I also need my PC back very soon.

What I found on the inside didn't look too bad, I've seen the inside before but I didn't know what the bits were for. Turns out something had been smashed, it was made of plastic/glass and looks like one of the AMPS you find inside a plug. It looked like it melted (Caused from the overheating) then exploded since it would have ruined what ever goes through it.

From my basic description here, do you think there could be any further damage to the system? I need it soon so I need to know if I should just buy myself a new PSU or if there is anything else I should check and note. Thanks guys!

There could be damage to the rest of your system. That is possible, but the cheapest route to finding out if only the PSU was affected is to buy a new PSU. Don't buy a cheap one either. A PSU is not the PC part you want to skimp on as it can affect every component in your system.

1) Never, EVER open a PSU. You most likely did not know.. But they can cause Severe damage, Injury or even Death. There are components that will hold enough electricity to kill someone. Be VERY careful.

2) To answer your question. If you don't see physical damage (unlikely) the only way to know is get another PSU and test it out.

Make sure you get a quality name brand. XFX, Corsair, etc. (theres more then that just drawing a blank)

By what you are saying, you aboslutely will need a new power supply. And don't bother playing around in a PSU unless you know electronics or your an electrician. Simply grab a new reputable brand PSU i.e Corsair, Seasonic, and test your components, also check for any visible damage on all of your components. Curious, what brand of PSU did you have and how old..Good luck

There is no way to test your other components if you don't have another PSU. Do you have a spare one or can you borrow one from a friend?

In any case, since it's blown up you'll need to buy a new one anyways, so try to get one from a brand with good reputation like Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, etc...

Once you have another PSU, you'll be able to see if other components aren't working.
