I have a Dell 531 (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4400+ (2.30GHZ) and wondering if worth buying Windows 7 (64-bit) and then adding more memory versus buying a new computer. Primary use will be for photography.

First, there are several bottlenecks at play here and upgrading memory is the least of your concerns. Your processor and mainboard chipset will bottleneck no matter how much memory you put in your system (or even installing Windows 7).

I recommend upgrading your computer all together and getting at least 8GB of memory. If you're looking to save money, AMD still has great performance to value ratio. I myself have an AMD FX 8350 and 990FX mainboard with 16GB of memory. I haven't noticed any hiccups when editing in photoshop, premiere or after effects. If you're looking for power then Intel CPU's will be a good place to start.

Are you looking to save money or looking for more power?

Thanks all - I guess that answers my question - go new. Computer would be for photo editing, though not for professional use. I'm trying to save money and replace one of the computers that we currently have and wanted to see if upgrading another computer we have would be beneficial versus buying new. I have both AMD and Intel processors here at the house - so I know about both.

So instead of updating the Dell 531 I added extra memory to my Dell 560 (up to 6GB) and added a Nvidia GT620 (with 1GB). All is going well to date. Now a new LCD. For photography is it better to connect the LCD with HDMI, DVI-1 or VGA? And on that note - suggestions on an LCD (around 21") to handle this under $200? It is not for professional photography - a hobby. Thanks -

Legokill101 - recent memory installed is ddr3 - 10660

Thanks -
