I originally had 2gb of RAM even though the computer I bought advertised 6. I opened it up last week and lo and behold, the chip was never installed or fell out, and was sitting at the bottom of the case. I plugged it in but windows is saying the entire 4 gb is hardware reserved. What can I do to make this memory accesable to my system? I've turned off Maximum Memory under the Boot Advanced Settings. I've physically reseated and tested each individual memory card.

Hello,:hihi:

The following article is especially for users with Windows 7 operating system (OS), however the same techniques can be used to rectify the issue if you are not using windows 7 OS -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978610

If you are not using windows 7 then you can uncheck the maximum memory limit the following way:
Run > Type 'msconfig' > boot tab > advanced options > uncheck the maximum memory if it is limited.

Hope this article helps your cause. Let me know how it goes. ;)

So after following the guide, my problem still remains. Hp has no updates for my bios, and I couldnt find a "memory remapping" option anywhere. I'm considering reinstalling windows, but as it was an OEM version, I'm not sure how to go about doing that with a repair install without installing a trial version of windows 7. I have an HP p6-2120, the RAM in question is a 2*2gb DDR3, while the single 2gb RAM chip works just fine. I plugged in the double chip to either slot and the computer fails to load up, while loading up just fine with the single. And when they are paired, 4gb from the double goes into hardware reserved memory. Is this a faulty chip?

you should test each ram on its own then test each slot , got be a faulty DIMM or a faulty stick , just to be on the safe side tho ,remove all rams and teh battery for a few secs then put the battery back in and test the rams
