I am setting up a home office centered around a laptop computer (specific model TBD but will have a GTX6XXM graphics card). I need the laptop for travel purposes. When I'm at home, i would like to run 2 external monitors (the laptop monitor will not be used). I currently do this with a desktop computer, but that graphics card has dual DVI outputs, so it's a simple setup.

I would like the two monitors to be discrete, not just a stretched desktop (my current setup calls this dual view). I know dual view can be setup with the laptop monitor and 1 external monitor, but it is unclear how to setup two external monitors that are not cloned. The laptop will likely have VGA and Hdmi outputs, with the possibility of DVI.

Is there some external device than can do this? Or, is there some software that can split a stretched desktop into two viewing areas? Can I simply run 1 monitor off VGA and the other off Hdmi? This is not for gaming, and will likely be Windows 8.

Thanks,

Dave

There are some docking stations that can do this.

You can simply just have 1 monitor on each connection so yes, 1 on vga and the other on hdmi.
