M4A77TD upgrading RAM

I've been upgrading my PC (AMD Phenom II X4 965, 4gb generic ddr3 1333, AMD 7950, M4A77TD Mobo), trying to throw another 8 gigs in (or worst case scenario upgrade it *to* 8gb).

So I've now gone through trying some Corsair XMS (2x4g) and Crucial (2x4g) and I've gotten only a black screen with both (no BIOS or anything). I've made sure the corresponding RAM is grouped with it's own, it's certainly in there right, and I've tried both pairs of slots (New RAM with old RAM in both pairings, New RAM on it's own in either slot pairing), but no RAM seems to work besides the RAM I've always had. It just boots up normally with the old RAM, but the new RAM just black screens.

With the Crucial (which I still have) I had even checked through their site to guarantee compatibility (the Corsair should have just been an updated version of the RAM on Asus's compatibility list anyhow, but I figured there was a small chance that was the issue), so I'm at the end of my rope.

Any ideas at all? My BIOS is set to auto for each slot, as well.

Crucial RAM specifics: (CT2KIT51264BA1339; PC3 10600 ddr3, 1333 UDIMM240)

Hello, :hello:

Could you let me know the specifications of the original memory? If you are unable to find the specs of the original memory then install CPU-Z (click here) and check the SPD tab. You can find the manufacturer's part number, and other specs.

# I couldn't understand whether you have tried to install the crucial or Corsair memory alone in the memory slots or not. If you have then let me know if you've encountered any errors (apart from the BSOD) or beep tones. If you haven't then try installing a single module and keep the other three slots empty and see if boots and then try the same process with the next module. (Reset the CMOS and then try the above process). Also try updating the BIOS from Asus support...

Update: forgot to reset CMOS when installing this last set of RAM (the crucial).

I can now boot through BIOS, it registers the RAM there, but I get a BSOD when windows finally boots (memory_management and page fault in a nonpaged area).

Update2--gave it a last shot, double checking everything. Booted to windows and now chkdsk started. I can hear the hard drive spin up and down fairly loudly right now but there's no signs of a bad drive. After chkdsk completed (also found nothing) it reboots to windows again, but get a black screen only, though I hear the windows startup at one point. The hard drive continues to whir up and down for some reason.

I've gone back to the original ram for now, no issues beyond one BSOD when I first returned. Hdd doesn't seem to be damaged, chkdsk being forced to run was just weird.

http://www.directron.com/3amo1333d32048.html is the old ram, it's 2x2g wintec 1333mhz ddr3. I have tried just the new corsair ram, even one piece at a time. The bios seems to recognize it but then I get a blue screen when windows starts, and I have to reset cmos to get it to boot again at all. Never get a beep tone or error outside of the BSOD when windows loads, but those are consistent, followed by the machine not booting back up after until the CMOS is cleared.

I have yet to update the bios, for some reason ez flash gave me trouble and I didn't have time to figure out the dos install yesterday, but once I'm home I'll give that a shot.

Side note: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/269386-30-m4a77td-problem-conflict is pretty much my exact problem (minus the up to date bios, which I'll try tonight), really hoping I don't have to but a brand new mobo to solve it though lol--rarely mess around with that stuff or the liquid cooling attached to it. If the ram works in a new mobo that may be the only option--just want to try everything else first.

OK! So...Finally updated the Bios (much easier since I found the MoBo disk and used it with the downloaded ROM to flash it quickly. Had a crash when I booted it up, then on reboot everything worked fine.

Then I put in the new RAM, reset CMOS, and booted it back up--made it to windows load again and BSOD. Rebooted it *wheeze*, tried to see if there was anything in BIOS that I could change to make it work, but found nothing, discarded and rebooted, and let it finish just to see--and it worked. I've restarted a few times and checked everything thoroughly now, it's working!

It may have just been the Bios up to date, but i'm now wondering if the MOBO itself is being a bit troublesome since it failed under the exact same conditions but then worked.

Either way, thanks for the input!

Welcome back!! :welcome:

I'm glad to hear that everything worked out well!!!:ouimaitre: Yes, sometimes some motherboards have some bizarre issues and i have found that many of the users of this motherboard have faced similar kind of issues after the memory upgrade. Some of them where solved by manual tweaking in the BIOS, some by BIOS update and others I have no clue yet. Goodbye for now!! :sourire:
