Hi there!

I have a Radeon HD 7850 Sapphire OC Edition..

I overclocked it to 1200Mhz core and is very stable and temps are ok..

Running 3DMark, the score has been increased.. but on games, doesn't change absolutely nothing.. even a poor fps!

I use fraps to see fps.. I let the card on default number and a game is running with 36 fps.. so, I change the card core to 1200Mhz and, there we go, the same 36 fps..

Weird, huh?

my computer specifications:

win 7 x64, cpu AMD FX 6300 with 4GB ram..

anyone else got this problem?

thanks in advance!

(sorry for my english)

What games, and at what resolutions? You might be CPU-bound rather than GPU-bound. A gain in a synthetic benchmark doesn't always guarantee a comparable (or even a noticeable/relevant) real-world gain.

You don't mention what game your getting this "36 fps" in. Not all games are limited by the GPU. Games like Starcraft II and other RTS are typically limited by the CPU. Some games also have a built in framerate limit, unlikely in your case though since they are usually 30 fps.

Since you see an improvement in 3DMark, it has had an affect. Also when your framerate is quite low, the increase won't be drastic. For instance if you perform a 10% overclock, the most you will see is a 10% increase in framerate and that's under ideal circumstances. So if you are only getting 30fps before the overclock, the best you can hope for is 33fps after the overclock.

Thanks for the answer Fulgurant!

I'm playing Skyrim, BF 3 and Crysis 3..

I always try to play with 1080p.. but when the fps runs low, I change to 1600x900

Stock values are 920mhz core and 1250mhz mem.. i overclocked 30% and i didnt get any performance improvement...

i got it techgeek!

i always try to overclock my video card when the fps is running low.. like 24-28 fps..

as you said, my performance gain is nothing.. that should give me at least 5 fps... or dont?

Yeah, that's a sizable overclock. Skyrim is kinda notorious for leaning on the CPU, though. Skyrim also has V-Sync on by default, so if your new FPS falls within a certain range, V-Sync could be rounding it down to the same fraction of your monitor's 60 Hz refresh rate that you saw before.

I don't have personal experience with BF3 and Crysis 3, but I do know that BF3 becomes severely CPU-bottlenecked in multi-player maps. Were you playing it online?

As techgeek pointed out, if you're seeing results in 3dmark, your overclock does work, in principle. Chances are that your real-world gains are just situationally limited. Do you have any other games you feel like trying?

All three of those games are very CPU intensive. I would say you are hitting the ceiling on the CPU and that's why you're not seeing a bump when you overclock your GPU. If possible try overclocking your CPU and see if that makes a difference.

I really thought about overclock my CPU... but he is with the stock fan.. and I dunno how much it can handle an overclock..

Maybe I can try to overclock my CPU to 10% and see if I get some improvement..

Thank you again!

Always start small when overclocking whether you have good cooling or not. Ten percent isn't too crazy depending on where your CPU thermals are before the overclock. If you are in fact CPU bound, you should see some sort of increase with a ten percent overclock.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Though wouldn't be a massive gain, increasing to 8Gb Ram will absolutely help with those games as well.

True that.. I've already ordered a brand new memory stick :)

Good call. Win 7 base recommend is 4gb. You should see 40-50fps once upgraded. 16gb u might see 60ish. Very cpu and bandwidth intensive games. Even switching to a sata3 ssd hd will give a bit of gain
