hi all, okay first the specs

Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit

BIOS : Lenovo ThinkCentre BIOS Ver 5CKT69.0

Processor : Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6600 @ 3.06GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.1GHz

Memory : 2048MB RAM DDR3

DirectX Version : DirectX 11

GPU : XFX AMD Radeon HD 6870 1gb

Motherboard : Lenovo LGA 775 socket

PSU : XFX 550w

i first started having problems about a week and a half ago l4d1 would shut down my pc ( on the lowest settings ) which was odd because i have like 20 hours+ on that game without any problems so i was like wow screw you too
i didnt think anything of it, i figured it was the update ( yes the game updated i havent played in a while ) so then i played l4d2 ( on the lowest settings ) for 2
or 3 days with my brother on split-screen without any problems then after that i play far cry 3 ( lowest settings ) no problem so then i was thinking it was definitely the update all is fine i get bored then see battlefield 3 premium edition
for $25 at amazon so i was like the "Aww Yea guy" and bought it ( note i know my pc specs are crap but i figured that even if i cant run it i can at least buy it while its cheap and play it when i get better hardware )
after download, making orgin account, ect, i try to play and to my amazement i was able to play so again "Aww Yea guy" played ( lowest settings ) campaign 1 hour then play co-op for few hours then try multiplayer and my pc shuts down after 20 mins " okay guy" first my screen will freeze for 3 seconds then turn blue for like 1 minute saying "searching for signal" i have HDMI connected then shows "shuting down" like its normally shuting down and i can immediately turn my pc back on after it
fully shuts down and this continues for the next 6 attempts but the last time i played i played in windows mode and pulled up "hwmonitor" on the side and had my brother watch the temps until it shut down the CPU was 139 degrees fahrenheit
and GPU 127 degrees fahrenheit which are the hots things in my pc according to "HWmonitor" and is now doing the same with far cry 3 about the same time too and my pc side shell thing has been off for like 6 months and out in the open but here is the odd part i did a prime95 test for like 20/30 mins and the highest my CPU hit
was 170 degrees fahrenheit but did not shut down??? i was sure my CPU was over heating and hovered there for about 5 mins before i stopped and i want to buy 212 EVO and 4gb of corsair ram so i wana try and fix this before i buy anything in case its something else and everthing is stock thanks in advance ...p.s. will these upgrades make any improvements for gaming or will it all be pointless because of CPU and sorry for any mistakes i made/make

I thought that because when I looked up your CPU, the stock speed appeared as 2.4 GHz. You're running at ~3.1 GHz. Maybe there was a typo somewhere, though, either in your post or in my search.

In any case, your temps are high. Overclocking probably isn't a good idea.

Heh, I think you should worry about your crashing problem first.

Please do double check for me that your CPU is an E6600, anyway.

Ok, nevermind. Intel released a second E6600 in 2009 that runs stock at 3.06 GHz.

Obscure naming/numbering schemes rear their heads again!

So anyway, buying a new CPU cooler might not be a bad idea. Or you can try cleaning/reseating the old one (applying new thermal paste).

That might not fix your crashing problem, but it ought to help with your temperatures. The crashing problem could be bad memory, corrupted drivers, any number of things.

Do you see any errors in Event Viewer? Are your crashes bona fide Blue Screens? If so, do you have any minidump error reports?
