Accedently screwed Motherboard directly into case

Recently when I was building a PC, I forgot to put the standoff screws in and screwed the motherboard directly to the case. Everything worked fine, but a few hours into use, the room started to smell like electricity. After I searched electricity smell after new comptuer build, somebody on a forum suggested that the motherboard was touching the case and shorting. I realized I forgot the standoff screws, and felt really dumb for a moment. Anyway, now the machine is shutting down (there are a lot of windows updates) so will this cause any long term damage? Was that smell potentially bad for my health? I opened a window after a while, but I can't imagine anything too bad would happen.

Thanks for the help.

Are they shutdowns due to required restarts? If so, there is no need to stress just yet.

No.

The updates downloaded and needed to be installed the next restart, and then finished. After that, I unplugged the power cord, and I will reinstall the MOBO correctly tomorrow. I'll just have to hope nothing bad happened.

This morning I screwed the MOBO on with the standoffs, at first the visual output was temperamental, but I reconnected all the power connectors into the MOBO, and reconnected the graphics card, so far it seems to work.
