Which is better? PS4 OR gaming desktops

I recently found out about the new ps4 and was wondering if a budget desktop build would fare better the ps4. some of my friends are going to go for the ps4 but i believe that a gaming desktop would be better. please help me make my decision !!!!!!

First of all, define "budget desktop build" in terms of price etc.

Because if it is a sub-500 pound PC, perhaps you'd be better off with the PS4 due to the fact that most games would be optimised to work on the hardware, such as DDR5 8GB of RAM, and a graphics card that compares to the GTX660 or just below 660ti, thus meaning it will perhaps provide better performance than a budget PC. Also, it would be best to go on the platform that the majority of your friends would be going on since on PC, you may not have as many to play with!

If you were getting a slightly more expensive PC (i.e. £800 - 1500) then PC would definitely give you the better performance, but you wouldn't be able to play with your friends, yet again.

PCs can also be upgraded later on, but the console will remain the same for perhaps the next 5-10 years (depending on how long this gen lasts).

If you spend however much the PS4 will cost 400-600 dollars, you WILL get more performance than the PS4 offers. Especially when you consider that if you feel like it, you can upgrade/change parts later if you want. You can also buy the desktop now, and buy a PS4 a few years later when its cheap and "old".

Usually games are also cheaper for the PC, especially after a little while. Right now, you can get Alan Wake for 1$ for the computers. Steam sales are very abundant with pretty much -75% sales twice a year and more. You will also have a larger selection of games, full backwards compatability etc.

Ofcourse, you can do MORE with that gaming pc than just game. Ofcourse you can browse the internet, watch videos and movies, write essays and do other school/work related things. So a PC is more than a console.

TL;DR Gaming desktop is a better choice.

It depends what you want from it. If your are looking at purely gaming I expect the PS4 to Keep up with or outdo PCs 2-4 times its price as developers can get much more out of the hardware without having to run windows and knowing exactly what hardware they will be running 100% of the time. I suspect only game developers that have experience on both platforms have an idea how games will really compare. My best guess to directly answer you question is I suspect the PS4 will perform in games like a $1500 PC at todays prices but this will likely go down to around $1000 when everyone next gen CPUs and GPUs are released, which should be before or shortly after the PS4 release.

PS4 is definitely the console to get if you don't want to spend $600+ on a desktop computer. You'll have less settings to manage and very few bugs/hassles playing games on a console vs. PC.

I can definitely see the upsides to both, but the main thing for me is I haven't touched a game disc or spent more than $5 on a game in 3 years because of Steam. If you build a rig that can run last year's games on High at decent resolutions you're not spending more than $700 or so, and then most of last years games can be had for $5-10 if you wait for a 75% off sale (several times a year).

the xbox one and ps4 will be packing alot of horsepower for the price you're paying, and the new features included are kind of interesting. But if your budget is set to $800+ then you can easily build a PC that will outperform the new xbox one and ps4.
