Advice on a CPU specifically for gaming?

The game "Guild Wars 2" puts a lot of pressure on the CPU, especially when rendering many characters in PvP. Therefore I want to buy a new processor that will specifically get me more FPS in GW2, (and potentially other games.)

However, I do not have much money to spend - £150 is my budget. Obviously, I would love an i7, but at £250 it's just far too expensive for me.

I'm leaning towards buying AMD due to the lower costs - specifically, the AMD FX-8350 - it seems to be a relatively powerful CPU at a really good price; however forum opinions seem to be that it's not that good for gaming, due to the lack of using all 8 cores.

Therefore I would really like some opinions on what I should get, with the requirements:
* To max fps and performance in gaming only (specifically Guild Wars 2)
* Around £150

Thankyou very much for reading!

FX-8350 is a great choice. For future, since the game industry is shifting to AMD due to the next-gen consoles going AMD. the i7 is a better CPU but for the price, its not drastic difference. Even an i5 will get the job done.

Whats your current build? CPU, MB, Video card, and RAM.

Epsilonae,

Probably the best cost / performance CPU for gaming at the moment is the i5-3750K. Games are still predominantly single-core, so even 4 cores is ample > clock speed is more critical and an intel CPU with a "K" at the end means "Killer Klocked", unlocked to overclock. I see these cost £163 at Microcenter UK, but if you buy from the US and not get clocked in the wallet with VAT, an i5 from Newegg is $215 or about £145. Of course, this is assuming you have a motherboard with the LGA 1155 socket.

A good CPU though is not enough to get good results in games > the other critical component for good frame rates is the video card, and for this it seems that about the best cost /performance is the GeForce GTX 650 of which a number of models are available in the US for about $110 (£73).

One tactic would be to buy these items used on eBay. I've bought both CPU's and video cards used and never had a problem, though I would say used video cards are the riskier. It seems to me that UK prices for new components are about in Pounds what they are in Dollars in the US, that is, $ X1.5.

From completed listings, it appears a used i5-3570K costs about $150 (£100) in the US or on eBay UK about £120-130 and a used GTX 650 (1GB) can be had for about $75 (£50) or Ebay UK about £ 55-60 > so together about your £150 budget in the US and about £180 in the UK. One problem might be finding US eBay sellers willing to post over the pond, as shipping is so very expensive now > you may well have about the same costs buying in the UK, especially as it seems the prices for a used GTX 650 is very similar.

Cheers,

Intel Core i5 3570K will be the best for your budget. Because it has 4 cores 4 threads 3.4-3.7GHz. Can be overclock minimum of 4GHz.

So what are you waiting for..

TARA !!! hahahaha :lol:
