Help with SFF Office Build

I am planning a Small Form Factor build to replace my wife’s aging HP Pavilion computer. It will be used for MS Office applications and web browsing. The key factors are modest size and quiet performance. I’ve selected the Intel Core i3-3225 Ivy Bridge HD Graphics 4000 chip so that I will not need an additional GPU. I will be using the Gigabyte GA-Z77N-WIFI LGA 1144 mini-ITX MoBo as it has built in WiFi to connect to our home network. Storage will be handled by an SSD for the OS and a modest HD for data files.

The problem I am having is selecting the case and PSU. The three cases under consideration (in order of size displacement on the desktop) are: Fractal Designs Node 304, SilverStone SUGO SG-05, and the new Lian Li PC-Q27. I am not planning on installing an optical drive to save space (the Fractal case does not allow this anyway) but will have an external one for the rare occasion that she needs one. The Lian Li case is so new that I cannot find any build reviews on line but its size is tempting but I am concerned about the passive cooling (no fans in this unit) and there is not a lot of internal space to work with.

All three cases take ATX PSU and the Corsair CX430M (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139049) seems to be a good choice since it is modular and I can reduce the cable stuffing in the case. Here are my issues:

1) the Fractal Designs case is probably the easiest to build, but the footprint is the largest,
2) the Lian Li case is has the smallest foot print but I’m unsure whether there would be adequate cooling and (air circulation would only come from the CPU fan and the PSU which will exhaust air because of the way it mounts in the case.
3) the SUGO SG-05 appears to be a good candidate but I’m not certain about the noise level from the fan.

I would appreciate any thoughts about passive cooling from those who have built small systems and the specifics outlined above.

With your requirements (web browsing/Office) and a small footprint, you may want to look into something like the Intel NUC (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856102002). Keep in mind you will have to buy RAM and a micro SSD drive seperately. (and a power cord).

Actually I would look at getting an AMD APU. Since you're not going to be using a dedicated GPU then that would make sense. The integrated graphics on the Intel HD 4000 are not meant to be used for anything other than basic tasks. The AMD APU has far stronger integrated graphics should the PC be used for something like photo or video editing. Here's something I would suggest:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 37.8 CFM CPU Cooler ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A85X-ITX Mini ITX FM2 Motherboard ($105.38 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($72.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: OCZ Vector Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($128.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case ($99.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Green 380W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($49.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $702.29
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

The Node 304 is a bit more expensive than the proposed case, and is still relatively easy to build in. The SSD gives you fast boot and is useful for other tasks. And I also included a far better PSU than the CX430 is. The Seasonic S12 would be a bit more but I don't know what your budget is.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a Fractal Designs fanboy having just done a build using the Arc Midi R-2. I like the Node 304 but the problem is it has a large footprint although it's smaller in height. I will be getting an SSD (have one in my new build and it's great how fast it boots and the dedicated programs I regularly use load). I'll look at the Antec PSU; I have a Seasonic in my build but it's a 650W which is clearly overkill for this system!

Yeah I really like Fractal Design cases. I really want to do an mITX PC based around the Node 304 but that won't be for quite a while. The Antec is a rebranded Seasonic unit that can be had for less than $40, it's a steal if you ask me.
