OS on RAID 5 or RAID 1

Hello,

I have a Dell server with 6 hard disk of 300 GB. This server hosts virtual machines and user data.
I'm wondering the best disk configuration to implement:

1. Dedicate two disks in RAID 1 for the OS and four RAID 5 for data and virtual machines. In this case I will only have (4-1) x300 GB of space on the RAID 5.

2. Use the six drives in RAID 5, then create a C: \ partition for the OS and D: \ for data and VM. I'll have more space on partition D: \ for data and VM.

I'll appreciate your comments.

Thank you.

I would choose the RAID5, BUT I suggest you add more disks and have at least 1 hot spare

you have to consider the amount of time the server will be down (degradation) if a drive were to fail, and have to rebuild the data

The os should be on it's own drive - no need to have a RAID 1 if you have a current backup every day
