I'm not even sure if I'm using the proper terminology here.

Basically what I decided to do is try to rip all of my current dvds I have to a digital library so that I could set a media center and also have a digital copy so if the original disks get scratched, lost, broken etc I would still have the movies.

All of the software I have tried basically gives the same error of the disks being copyright protected and end up failing somewhere in the process. I've never attempted this before so I'm at a loss and want to save myself as much time as possible before I start just downloading and trying out random software.

SO the question is. What type of software do you use? I'd prefer something free but if that's unavoidable it's worth it to me to pay as long as it's not outrageous.

Also any tips on anything I'm not seeing or missing are appreciated. I'd rather follow all of the proper guidelines and do this right the first time.

Thanks!

This is a quasi legal topic depending on what country you are in. I'm not sure we can discuss this without violating the TOS. Stripping copy protection and such.

Fair enough I was worried about that.

I'm in the US. To your knowledge is it even legal to build a media library with dvd's you've purchased? Or is that still infringing upon the whole do not copy thing... even if i'm not burning them?

It's a grey area. It should be legal and I seriously don't think you would be sued or prosecuted for it but I'm just not sure about Tom's TOS and the whole topic. :vip:

I think that's why pretty much any new DVD or Blu Ray comes with a Digital Copy included.

Lame lol. Maybe if I refine my Google searches I'll have better luck. :p. Most everything I get involves converting to burn etc and typically ends up with a $20-$40 program that I'm unsure if it'll do what I need it to.

I'll try Jinay's suggestion and in the mean time maybe an Moderator can lay some insight as to if this is an appropriate discussion for Tom's. Cause I'd love to get some feedback.

Thanks again Anorte

Not a Legal expert; However, as LONG as you own the DVD/Blu-ray and are makeing a PERSONAL copy for Yourself you should be OK - Untill the Companies start allowing a FREE replacement disk for damaged disk. The Key issue is you must Own the DVD, Can not use with say a Rental or a barrowed DVD - THAT would be Illegal.

Anyway the Program I use is ANYDVD. Not a Freebee, but it works great, I've been using for a long time. Currently a 20 % discount.
http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html

I like to convert my dvds/Blu-rays to a small mpeg4 video so that I can put them on a thumbdrive and play on my Asus Tablet and Samsung Laptop when on travel (ie on the plane/motel/hotel) and when on vacation.

It does allow coping to dvd to HDD.

It also corrects for some movies that you want to play, but the Player you use has not yet updated for the copy protection scheme.

Slysoft Does a update quite frequently for new movies.

They have been in bussiness for a LONG time, and I think the Movie industry would have shut them down long ago if a problem.

Added: There are several paid for programs that will convert the DVDs/Blue Ray DVDs to a format for tablets and iPads. This amounts to the samething - So again as long as you OWN the DVD, and the copy is for PERSONAL use should be fine in US.

The Verbage used indicates that it may NOT be legal as The licience is only for viewing - reason for the grey area. I Have not heard of a single case were an indiviual has been taken to court for making a PERSONAL copy (Not for sharing, nor profit).

Thanks a TON!
I'm going to be buying this as soon as I get home. I do own the dvd's. One of those college collections ;) have at least a 100 or more. The issue is some are getting to be 15-20 years old and I'm finding some aren't even playable any more. So I decided making a digital copy was the best bet as to keeping my collection in tack.

Love the idea of the mpeg4 for traveling. Will be using that for the road trips!

Thanks again Chief!

Question Chief,

I notice there are a lot of options to buy here.

AnyDVD
AnyDVD HD
Clone CD
Clone DVD
Clone DVD mobile

Assuming here that I'm only going to need AnyDVD HD and Clone DVD. The Clone CD is for music correct? And mobile of course for mobile (not gonna worry about it yet.. Limping into this)

Do you make physical copies of your DVDs with the Clone DVD? Or did you just stick with the AnyDVD HD only and make a digital copy only?

Sorry if it's a stupid question. A quick glance I'm pretty sure I understand what each program does.. Just wanna make sure I'm not paying for more then i'll need.

Also.. Since it's in Euro's.. Will a USA debit/credit card work? Thanks!!

*edit* I see visa etc is accepted scratch the last question :)
