my wife -finally- conceded to let me spend *around* $250usd on a new gpu, but theres such a myriad of choices, i dunno what to go with.
i have:
2500k OC'ed @4-4.5ghz
2x4gb ram
antec TP750
1 ssd, 4 7200rpm HDD's

cooling proficiency takes precedence over noise, but i'd rather not have a hairdryer

really wanna get rid of my 1gb 6850, but the choices are mind boggling. I game at 1080p, and i'd really like to max out the pretty effects in farcry3, crysis 3, GTA, etc

my mobo supports 1x16/8x8 sli/xfire, but id rather just get a good 2+gb card

suggestions?

yeah... at the 250 price point you're not going to get anything better then a 7870xt... which is a very good gpu.

I'm not sure about maxing out crysis3 with it... but it will be able to play crysis3 at respectable levels... and everything else it will max easily (at 1080p)

We're here for you bro.

Yes sometimes the only difference is the OC.

And you can OC things yourself, soo...

Dual fans is one of the reasons why you should always

NOT go with reference cards. More cooling!

just know the 7870xt is a faster gpu. but yeah... the 660 is a nice card.

some of the factory overclocked cards come with better coolers and slightly increased voltage allowing for better overclocking (kepler gpus are all voltage locked, so you can't alter it, which limits the overclocking)

generally faster.

The 660 matches or is even slightly slower then the 7870 when both are overclocked... stock it beats the 7870. The 7870XT performs much closer to the 7950 then the 7870... and overclocked can just about match a stock 7950
