Retail-bought games on Steam?

Hi there, new member here.

I wanted to know if I buy a game through a store(particularly Deus Ex Human Revolution, Mass Effect 2 and Left 4 Dead 2) would it be necessarily compatible with Steam, i.e., be able to register on it and get updates and what not, not just a shortcut in "My Library"?

the game will have a "steam works" label on the back, or a label saying its completable with steam

I don't know how it works with updates and such, but Steam will let you add non-steam games.

if you add a non steam game it basically adds the file to your games list. the game will solely act as a shortcut (you will get the steam overlay in game most of the time) however if it is a steam compatible game you will install it register through steam, and steam will keep it up to date

Left 4 Dead 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution will require you to register the game on Steam. So you have to use it for them. Mass Effect 2 will not register on Steam, but you can register it on Origin. Sorry if this is bumping, But, if you go "register a game" and put the code in, That should work...
