First time build. Motherboard/PSU unresponsive?

To begin, I wasn't even supposed to be building this computer. My "friend" was going to build it for me and I was going to watch him and learn. I guess he decided he didn't want to help anymore so he just disappeared and ignored calls. So bare with me and my initial lack of computer engineering knowledge.

What I believe to be the problem is that I originally installed the motherboard without using motherboard standoffs (didn't even know they existed because I wasn't given the screws that came with the case until yesterday) which caused much frustration with the I/O panel and graphics card. After finally getting the motherboard, ram, cpu, power supply and (not fully seated) graphics card installed I powered it up. The fans were running, the LED came on, I was on top of the world. Until I realized I had no video input on my monitor. This would become my stopping point for a more relaxed and far less aggravating night. I turned off the computer, threw a t-shirt over this open case to prevent dust falling in it over night, and called it a day. The next morning when attempting to power the computer on again, there was no response. After unscrewing everything and trying to re-install the motherboard, still no response. Finally today after re-installing it with the standoff screws, everything fits much better and it looks way better, but I still get no response when I try to power it up. My conclusion is that the motherboard short-circuited whenever I had it installed without the standoff screws, or that my PSU fried somehow. The only problem I have with these conclusions is that the computer was not powered on overnight when I left it. The power supply was plugged in but the computer was turned off.

This is my build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Yasj
The case came from my little brother's unsuccessful build so I'm unsure of the exact type of case, but it appears to be full size and it definitely accommodates my motherboard (once I learned what standoff screws were)

Cliff-notes
1. Friend was supposed to build my custom computer
2. Friend bailed
3. Brother gives me his case but without the screws, chassis covers, HDD holder thingymabob
4. I install motherboard without standoffs and complete the build
5. Computer powers up fine but without video input
6. Next day computer doesn't power up
7. I recieve screws, standoffs, etc.
8. Re-installed with standoffs and still no power

Thank you in advance for anybody that helps. I'm mainly just looking for clarification that my motherboard or my psu needs to be replaced for sure.

P.S. I've been looking through this thread ( http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems ) but have not found anything that sounds like it will solve it.

Pull the PSU out, unplugging everthing. Plug it in to the wall, and plug in a fan to one of the peripheral connectors. Then use a bare paperclip, or other length of conductive metal, to short out the green wire in the big connector to any black wire. The fan should start.

If it starts, your PSU is OK. Breadboard it (set up the MB/CPU/HSF/RAM/GPU outside the case on something non-conductive, to eliminate short circuits).

Well I tried the paperclip trick and the fan did not come on, so I'm guessing it's the PSU? Is there any way of knowing if the motherboard is messed up before I get my PSU replaced. I don't want the warranty to be up on it before I realize I need to return it.

Sorry it took so long to get back. The PSU was indeed the problem. New PSU came in, all is well, I'm up and running and enjoying the amazing graphics on Far Cry3, Crysis 3, and Battlefield 3. Good things come in 3. Thank you for the help. Solution has been chosen.
